Bats Come Alive as Softball Storms Past Lafayette 8-3

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball program saw the bats come alive to take down Lafayette 8-3 Friday afternoon in the first game of the Radford Invitational.

PLAY BY PLAY
Starting pitcher Madison Sabo worked through some trouble on the basepaths early as the Leopards put a runner on second with one out off a walk and sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout, Sabo took a groundout herself to keep things at 0-0.

Radford didn't wait long scoring their first run in the bottom half as Peyton Simmons began things with a single through the left side. After a walk, Amber Wolfe moved Simmons to third who came home on an RBI single from Malli Groves.

Now up 1-0, the game would quickly tie back up due to some defensive miscues. An error followed by two groundouts put a runner on third with two outs. After a walk, the Leopards tried a timing play with a delayed steal that an errant reception on the throw from Wolfe allowed a run to come home.

After a quiet handful of frames, Radford had their biggest inning in the bottom of the third. After Simmons drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch and would move to third with Amanda Lee on second after a misplayed ball in right. Wolfe would immediately cash in, singling to center to score both Simmons and Lee to make it 3-1 Radford.

A single from Groves and walk by Kelley Feigen loaded the bases. After a dropped foul ball in left, Hailey Scott made sure to take advantage of the second life with a triple that cleared the bases and made it 6-1. Scott would eventually come in after an infield single RBI from Simmons.

Now ahead big, Sabo started to cruise and retired nine straight going into the sixth inning. Lafayette had their big swing in the sixth with a two-run homer that tightened the game at 7-3. Morgan Cooper came in with a dominant relief effort from there. She needed just one out in the sixth to end the threat, allowing the offense to add some insurance in the bottom half.

An infield single by Lee set up Wolfe who would add another RBI to her total with a double into the right field gap that pushed Radford back up 8-3. In the seventh, Cooper looked untouchable as she picked up back-to-back strikeouts to give Radford the win over Lafayette.
