Highlanders Roll, Take Series Opener over Keydets

RADFORD, Va. –The Radford baseball program used a consistent offensive effort jumpstarted by a pair of homers from Devin Parks to take down VMI 9-4 in the weekend opener.

VMI began the scoring right away in the game as they got a solo shot in the top of the first to go ahead 1-0. Raymond Ladd settled in from there, though, and tossed a scoreless second to pave the way for the Highlanders to tie in their home half of the inning.

Parks had the big hit, crushing a homer to right center that tied the game right back up at 1-1. Both the Keydets and Highlanders were held quiet in the third inning, but Radford would pile on a big lead thanks to a big bottom of the fourth.

After Parks laced his second homer of the night to give the team a 2-1 lead, Alex Levesque walked and Brady Whitacre doubled to put two runners in scoring position. After a Noah Toole walk pushed the lead to 3-1, Brady Powell singled to bring in two more runs. Eli Hudgins capped the five-run inning with an RBI double that made it 6-1 Radford.

Ladd would work a scoreless fifth and work through trouble in the sixth to finish his longest outing of the year so far allowing just two runs on seven strikeouts. Radford added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth after Toole tripled in a run and Powell brought Toole home with a double.

Now ahead 8-2, Daniel Quintana entered for two innings of relief keeping VMI at bay. Mason Hatcher slammed the door shut with three straight outs after Radford tacked on one more in the eighth to finish the 9-4 victory for the Highlanders.
