Keen Homers Early, Rough Inning Leads to VMI Evening Weekend Series

LEXINGTON, Va. – Hunter Keen gave the Highlanders a lead early with a two-run homer, but a rough fourth inning proved too much to overcome Saturday afternoon as VMI evened the weekend series taking game two 11-6.
 
Radford needed to see just three pitches before taking their first lead of the day as Brady Powell singled and Keen followed with his two-run blast that gave Radford the early 2-0 lead. An error in the bottom of the first gave VMI its first run, but starting pitcher Cory Costello was able to recover and preserve the 2-1 lead.
 
The Keydets would even the game with a solo shot in the second, but Costello recovered once again to keep the game tied. VMI added a pair of runs with two outs to take a lead in the third and then used a big fourth inning plating six runs to break the game open at 10-2.
 
Matthew Lefevers and Ben Keefe provided a strong relief inning of work to stable the ship allowing Radford to tighten things in the sixth. After Keen drew a hit by pitch, Hudgins singled to put a pair on. A fielder's choice off the bat of Nace brought in a run and a Junho Son double would bring in another. Alex Levesque dropped one more hit in to score Son as the Highlanders now only trailed 10-6.
 
The Highlanders' offensive efforts would end there, though, as VMI tossed clean seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Adding on one more solo homer in the seventh, the Keydets held on to defend their home turf with the 11-6 final.
 
UP NEXT
Radford completes the split-up series tomorrow afternoon returning home to host VMI at Carter Memorial Stadium. The series finale is set for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
