Missed Opportunities Hurt Highlanders in Big South Opener at Spartans

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Radford softball program fell in a tough 1-0 final in nine innings to USC Upstate Friday night in their Big South opener.

PLAY BY PLAY
Starting pitcher Dakota Redmon tossed one of her better games of the season Friday night despite the losing result. The sophomore tossed a clean eight innings including navigating through multiple trouble spots starting in the first stranding two runners on base.

The Highlanders offense had their first big opportunity in the top of the second as Abby Bossler and Kelley Feigen both singled to put runners on the corners. Radford tried to execute a double steal, but both runners would be caught stealing to end the frame.

Redmon worked around two baserunners in the second and stranded a runner at second in the third to keep it a 0-0 game. After a clean fourth, Radford's offense had another chance to score in the fifth. Hailey Scott and Bossler both began the inning with singles, but both would end up stranded in scoring position.

Radford would again get a runner to second with one out in the sixth, but no ball left the infield to keep the score deadlocked at 0-0. In the bottom of the seventh USC Upstate would get their best scoring opportunity of the day after a 1-out triple. Redmon locked things down picking up a strikeout and nifty play on a groundball by Grace Bechtol to force the game into extras.

In the eighth Isabel Harrison would get things going with a pinch hit double. Amanda Lee would also draw a hit by pitch and swipe second to put two runners in scoring position. The rally stalled there, though, and Redmon would put up another zero in the bottom half to push the game to the ninth.

The Highlanders offense wouldn't capitalize off a lead off walk by Scott to begin the ninth, and the Spartans would finally break through to end the game with a walk off solo homer in the ninth to take the opener 1-0.
