Highlanders Use Small Ball to Spark Rally in Series-Opening Win Over Longwood

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford Highlanders baseball team scored a come-from-behind win, erasing a three-run deficit through the early innings for a 4-3 triumph over Longwood to begin the three-game series at Carter Memorial Stadium on Friday afternoon. The victory puts Radford at 11-11 on the season and gives them a Big South win in their first home conference game.

Trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, Radford still had not gotten a baserunner. That changed when Devin Parks and Brady Powell laid down a pair of perfect bunts for singles to get things cooking. The pair moved into scoring position on a double steal with nobody out, and a pair of sacrifice flies by Noah Toole and Alex Levesque made it a 3-2 game.

Radford tied it and took the lead in the seventh after trailing all game. By the seventh, they had worn down Longwood starter Jaxon Lloyd. Powell and Toole lined back-to-back doubles off Lloyd to even the game at 3-3 with one out. A single up the middle by Levesque put the go-ahead runner 90-feet from home with Tyler Sparrer coming to bat. The first baseman placed a self-defense bunt with Toole barreling towards home. He got it down to plate Toole, giving Radford a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish with the suicide squeeze.

All three Radford pitchers did well to limit Longwood from getting back into the game. Though Raymond Ladd allowed three runs in three innings, he kept the Lancers within a handful of runs. Joshua Milleville did a terrific job out of the bullpen, picking up his first win in relief across three scoreless innings. The New York native allowed just one hit and one walk with a strikeout. Trey Ludy also slammed the door, striking out a pair of Lancers while holding Longwood off the scoreboard late.

Powell and Toole provided three of Radford's four runs in the middle of the lineup. Powell led the Highlanders with two hits, while Toole contributed two RBI. Parks had a great day as well on the bases, swiping two bags. Entering with a sub-two ERA, Radford dealt Lloyd his first loss of the season.
