Baseball Secures Series Victory over Lancers with Strong Saturday Showing

BOX SCORE RADFORD, Va. – The Highlanders poured it on early and sailed the rest of the way over the Lancers Saturday afternoon to secure their first series victory in conference play 10-2 over Longwood.

Like Friday's start, the Highlanders would begin from behind but that deficit to the Lancers wouldn't last long. Down 2-0 after a pair of runs crossed in the top of the second, Radford's offense burst things open with a seven-run frame in the bottom half.

Devin Parks would begin the big inning by ripping a double to left and moving to third on an error by the pitcher. A Brady Powell single cut the deficit in half and scored Parks. The hits kept coming as Noah Toole and Alex Levesque singled to load the bases. Carter Richardson kept the line moving with another infield single that tied the game at 2-2.

After Junho Son gave Radford the lead with a bases loaded walk, Breckin Nace broke open the floodgates with a triple that cleared the bases and had Radford up 6-2. Finishing the inning just as he started it, Parks doubled in Nace to make the lead 7-2.

From there, starting pitcher Matthew Lefevers settled in for the Highlanders. Lefevers retired three straight in the third setting up the offense to take advantage of an error in the bottom of the third to tack on another run and make the lead 8-2.

It was another three-up, three-down inning for Lefevers in the fourth. His retired batters streak went as far as nine into the fifth until a hit by pitch broke it up. It was no worries, though, as Lefevers retired two straight to end the fifth and used a double play to wipe any scoring threat by the Lancers in the sixth.

Andrew Steinhaus would enter for Radford in the seventh putting a cap on Lefevers impressive showing. Steinhaus promptly retired the side, including two strikeouts. After Toole reached by a fielder's choice and swiped second and third base in the bottom of the seventh, Levesque brought Toole home with a single to push the lead further to 9-2.

In the eighth it was more of the same for Steinhaus as he picked up another quick three outs. After Radford added one more insurance run behind an RBI single by Nace, Steinhaus slammed the door shut in the ninth and finished the 10-2 victory for Radford.
