Lacrosse Falls to Furman to Open Big South Play
3/28/2026 6:21:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Radford Highlanders women's lacrosse team opened Big South play on Saturday afternoon and were beaten by Furman, 17-9, at Paladin Stadium.
KEY STATS
The Highlanders kept things close early, thanks in part by great defense by Ava LaManna. Down 1-0, the goalkeeper saved a free position shot to keep the deficit at one. O'Brien then drew a foul on the other end and scored on her free position shot to tie it at 1-1 with 6:45 left in the first. However, the Paladins broke through with two goals near the end of the first period to lead by two goals.
LaManna faced a host of shots that ended high of the net, and Cheney scored a goal on a free position shot to make it 3-2 with 10:44 left before halftime. Furman answered on the next position, but O'Brien added her second goal of the day a few moments later. Just like the first period, the Paladins ended the second with two late goals, making it 6-3 at the half.
The Paladins picked up the pace in the third quarter, scoring three times to go ahead by six goals in the third period. Cheney scored for a second time before Furman added a 10th tally to make it 10-4 after three. The Highlanders piled on five goals in the fourth period but could not stop Furman, who scored seven times in the final 15 minutes to win with a 17-9 final.
UP NEXT
The Highlanders are back in Radford for a match against Winthrop on Wednesday, April 1 (I promise it's not a joke the game will happen). First draw is set for 3:00 p.m. Fans can attend every home game at the SORC for free or follow along with the ESPN+ broadcast.
