RADFORD, Va. – The Highlanders got off to a rough start Tuesday night against Virginia Tech and weren't able to recover, dropping the 13-5 midweek contest.

The Hokies plated a pair early on against the Highlanders as two runs came in the first off a wild pitch and sacrifice fly. After being held hitless in the first, Radford would concede two more runs in the second both off solo homers.

Breckin Nace picked up Radford's first hit in the second, but the Highlanders were still held scoreless. Virginia Tech would post their biggest inning of the night plating four more runs in the third. Will Palmer entered in relief and was able to stop the bleeding, but Virginia Tech led 8-0.

Radford would chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the third. Tyler Sparrer singled and Junho Son laced a double down the left field line to break the ice for Radford's first run. Hunter Keen quickly followed with an RBI single and Radford would load the bases with multiple hit by pitches. Brady Powell drew a hit by pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Radford's third run in the inning making it 8-3.

Palmer picked up two more strikeouts before exiting in the fourth as Mason Hatcher tagged in to finish the inning with a strikeout. In the fifth the long ball kept falling for the Hokies as they hit another homer and added a pair of runs on a passed ball and sacrifice bunt.

Ben Keefe did a good job steadying things throughout, though, and threw a three-up, three-down sixth. Hunter Howard would toss the seventh and worked around a slew of walks to strike out three while only allowing one run.

Down 12-3 going into the eighth, the Hokies would tack on another run after a pair of hits and an RBI groundout. Andrew Steinhaus would toss a scoreless ninth and Radford would earn a few runs in the bottom half before the game ended. Mason Self singled while both Sparrer and Brady Whitacre walked to load the bases. Carrington Aaron and Lucas Edwards each drew walks to drive in runs, resulting in the 13-5 final.

The Highlanders will regroup and return to action this upcoming Thursday, April 2nd to kick off their next Big South series against USC Upstate. First pitch is at 6:00 p.m. and streaming on ESPN+.
