Baseball Crushes Catamounts, Falls to 49ers on Friday

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford Highlanders baseball team returned to the diamond on Friday and played two games, picking up a key win against Western Carolina, 7-1, in the early game before falling to host Charlotte, 7-1, in the night cap.

GAME ONE
Coming off a midweek 10-9 win against SEC power Georgia, the Catamounts were trying to keep the momentum going. Two runners reached for Western Carolina before Raymond Ladd settled in and got out of the jam. Radford's cleanup man Breckin Nace set the tone in the bottom of the first, smacking a three-run shot over the right field wall to make it 3-0 Highlanders. Ladd followed with a quiet second, and back-to-back singles to start the second led to a run and a 4-0 advantage for Radford after two.

Ladd battled some adversity in the third but managed to limit the damage. Facing the bases loaded with two outs and one already in, he managed to induce a groundout to Noah Toole to end the threat. He got through four with a 4-1 lead with three strikeouts.

Daniel Quintana took over in the fifth and retired three of the first four batters. Junho Son led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and scored on a Toole single down the right field line, extending Radford's advantage to 5-1 after five. Western Carolina had an opportunity to get back into it with the bases loaded in the sixth, but Quintana got a strikeout when he needed it to escape the threat.

Devin Parks' bat came alive in a big spot in the sixth, with the junior leadoff hitter driving in a pair to put Radford ahead comfortably, 7-1. Quintana managed to strand a runner in the seventh and two in the eighth for a scoreless outing. The right-hander picked up the win in the process to move to 3-0 on the season. Trey Ludy put away the Catamounts in the ninth with ease in a non-save situation to give the Highlanders a big first win back after having four days off of action.

GAME TWO
Radford finished on the short end of a 7-1 contest to Charlotte after winning by the same score a few moments earlier. Highlander starter Corey Costello struggled to find the strike zone early, walking two with a hit by pitch in the first. Charlotte capitalized with the free passes and an error to go up 2-0 after one. Like the pitchers earlier, Costello did limit the damage, stranding three 49ers on base.

Eli Hudgins put the Highlanders on the board and cut the deficit in half at the top of the fourth, scoring Son from third after the leadoff hitter reached on a walk. Costello kept the deficit at a run through five innings on the bump, allowing just one earned run.

Mason Self entered in the sixth and got two quick outs before giving up a triple. Will Palmer entered, and Charlotte hit a two-run shot off his fourth pitch he threw. The 49ers added another in the sixth to make it 5-1.

Radford was unable to cut into the deficit, and Charlotte got two more tallies off the Highlander bullpen in the eighth to make it 7-1. Costello took the loss despite pitching decently well, allowing just the two runs through five innings. Radford recorded just four hits (all singles) in game two, with Toole leading the team with two.
