Sabo Twirls Shutout as Highlanders Split Action with Bryant and Penn State

SALEM, Va. –Madison Sabo's shutout in a 1-0 win over Bryant highlighted the Radford softball program's first day at the Hokie Invite as the team split action later dropping a battle with (RV) Penn State 15-4.

GAME ONE
Radford's first game of the weekend was defined by dominant pitching as Madison Sabo stayed hot with another great showing for her first shutout with the Highlanders. The dominance began early as Sabo would retire the first nine batters in order.

Offensively, Radford's best opportunity in the game came in the third and the team cashed in. Grace Bechtol doubled to begin the inning and swiped third. Grace Hogie picked up the RBI with her sacrifice fly that gave Radford the only run it would need.

Bryant got its first base runners in the fourth with a single and a walk. Sabo worked through the traffic, though, getting a groundout to keep the 1-0 lead. In the fifth the Bulldogs would threaten even more, putting two runners in scoring position with just one out. Sabo ended the scare with a strikeout and groundout once again.

Bryant wouldn't back down putting two more runners on the basepaths in the top of the sixth. This time Sabo escaped the jam with a double play. With the shutout still intact and the lead hanging in the balance, Bryant tried one more time to break through in the seventh. After back-to-back singles with one out, Sabo picked up a big strikeout and fly out to end the game with a 1-0 Radford victory.

GAME TWO
A rough start sunk the Highlanders in their second game of the day against a tough Penn State squad that came into the week receiving votes in multiple major polls. In the top of the first, Penn State put up a 7-0 lead. The team scored six more in the third that would ultimately put the game fully out of reach.

Radford's offense was able to get some momentum moving in the home halves of the first and fourth. After a two-out double by Amber Wolfe, she came home as Hailey Scott was able to drive her home with a single.

In the fourth, Radford struck right away as Amanda Lee doubled and Malli Groves tripled. A walk by Layla Miles and hit by pitch drawn by Myla Russel loaded the bases. Jada Holt drove in another run with a fielder's choice while Hogie brought home another with a groundout. The rough pair of innings proved too much, however, as Penn State held on for a 15-4 final.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders return to action tomorrow with a pair of games against ACC foes. Radford will first face Boston College at 3:30 p.m. before taking on #11 Virginia Tech directly afterwards.
