Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader to Salvage Weekend Series at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Radford softball program used a big showing in the first game of a twin billing Saturday afternoon at Longwood to salvage the weekend series. The Highlanders took the first game 8-0 in five innings before falling victim to a walk off in a 6-5 final in game three.

GAME ONE
The Highlanders' patience was well rewarded in the first game of the day as the team drew eight walks and two hit by pitches to run away in the lopsided final. The hits came early as Peyton Simmons and Dakota Redmon both singled in the first, but the Highlanders came up empty.

Morgan Cooper started in the circle for Radford and the reigning Big South Pitcher of the Week looked like it with three straight outs. After back-to-back walks by Abby Bossler and Amber Wolfe started the second, Radford took full advantage of some Longwood miscues. A pair of errors brought the first run in for the Highlanders and a fielder's choice off the bat of Amanda Lee made it 2-0 Radford.

Redmon brought one more in off a sacrifice fly before the inning ended for the 3-0 lead. Cooper worked around an error in the bottom half, picking up her first strikeout, to preserve the lead. Hailey Scott began the third with a bang, doubling to right center. Thanks to some smart swings, another sacrifice fly this time from Kelley Feigen made it 4-0 Radford.

After a double play wiped a Lancers scoring threat in the third, danger came quickly again as the hosts loaded the bases with none out in the fourth. Cooper buckled down getting a strikeout, infield pop out and ended the inning with a huge strikeout that kept the Lancers from crossing home plate.

In the fifth, Radford's patience continued to pay off as the team piled on. Bossler, Wolfe and Feigen all drew walks to kick the inning off and Bechtol brought home a run on a sacrifice fly. After Lee and Redmon were hit by pitches to draw in another run, Malli Groves capped the big inning with a two-run single making it an 8-0 Radford lead. Cooper nailed down the win in the bottom half working around two hits to seal the run-rule 8-0 victory in five innings.

GAME TWO
The second game of the day was a back-and-forth affair between the two squads with Longwood jumping out early. After retiring the first two batters, two straight walks set up Longwood to single in the first run of the game. In the top of the second it was two walks by Groves and Scott which would set up a scoring opportunity for Radford.

Wolfe would single home the first run and Simmons would single home another pair to give Radford the 3-1 lead. An error that began the bottom of the second proved pivotal as the Lancers tagged on two runs in response, both unearned, to tie the game back up at 3-3.

Both starting pitchers settled in for a scoreless third, but Longwood tagged on another run in the fourth behind another error by Radford. Behind 4-3, the offense went back to work to try and tie the game again. After Lee singled, Groves placed a hit in the shallow outfield and thanks to some aggressive baserunning Lee was able to come all the way home and score.

Longwood responded again, though, scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Radford would get a great opportunity to tie again in the sixth as Bossler singled and Wolfe walked to put a pair on. A good bunt moved both into scoring position with just one out, but Radford was unable to scratch across a run.

After a scoreless sixth, Radford mounted a comeback attempt to tie the game once again. Lee began the inning with a single and an error had two runners on. Scott had the clutch hit, singling home Lee and putting runners on the corners in a 5-5 ball game. Bossler would draw a walk to load the bases, and Radford went aggressive on a fly ball, but a perfect throw at the plate nullified the attempt to take the lead.

In the bottom of the seventh the Lancers would get two runners on with a walk and hit by pitch. After a sacrifice bunt put both in scoring position, the Highlanders got a big strikeout before unfortunately surrendering the walk off hit in the 6-5 finish.
