Highlanders Take Senior Day Victory Over Gardner-Webb, 10-6

RADFORD, Va. – Mady Cheney and the Radford Highlanders women's lacrosse team put together an inspiring effort, refusing to be denied on Senior Day. The senior scored six times, helping the Highlanders earn a key Big South win over Gardner-Webb, 10-6, on Saturday afternoon at the SORC.

KEY STATS
  • Cheney tied a career-high with six goals, accomplishing the feat for the first time since April 20, 2024 at Presbyterian.
  • Sam Flippo rebroke her single-game caused turnover record, getting eight in the contest. The junior also set a new single-season record with 42 caused turnovers this season.
  • The team also set a new single-game caused turnover record with 20 total in the win.
  • Evie Gee also added a pair of goals to help celebrate her Senior Day.
  • At time of publication, the Highlanders now sit in a Big South conference tournament spot, bumping up to fifth with a 2-3 conference record.
PLAY BY PLAY
Both teams played a deliberate, patient offense, especially to start the contest. The Highlanders had a couple shots on goal but were turned away by the Runnin' Bulldogs goalkeeper, Emma Anderson. Gardner-Webb struck first and then scored a man-up goal to lead 2-0 at the first media timeout. Cheney found some space and drove in for her first goal with 3:26 left in the first quarter. A late foul gave Radford a free position attempt, but they elected to pull it out and start with possession in the second.

The decision to pull it out paid off, as Cheney scored again to tie it right away. Gee then got a great look and scored on the feed from Maddy Driscoll to give the Highlanders a 3-2 advantage early in the second. After several defensive stops, Gee had a free position attempt that was blocked, but the Ohio native picked up the rebound and scored to make it 4-2. Her goal withstood a review after Gardner-Webb challenged the call for a dangerous shot. The Highlanders made it a five-goal run with Ashlyn Bell finding the net. Gardner-Webb made a run to get back into it later in the half. Cheney scored for a third time a couple minutes before half, but a quick answer by Gardner-Webb kept it a one-goal game at the break.

The second half turned into an extremely physical, defensive slugfest. Radford did a terrific job killing a Gardner-Webb power play after Driscoll got a yellow card, but the defense forced several turnovers to keep the Highlanders on top. The Runnin' Bulldogs took a timeout midway through the quarter trying to regroup, but it would be Cheney who would capitalize, scoring on a free position shot to make it 7-5 shortly after the break. Gardner-Webb turned it over a total of 10 times in the quarter, and Bell scored again to extend Radford's lead to three goals after three quarters.

The fouls began to mount for Gardner-Webb, as they could not stop Cheney. The senior scored again on a free position shot that gave the Highlanders a 9-5 lead with just over 10 minutes left. The Runnin' Bulldogs scored with a man up to keep them close, but Ava LaManna began to make some clutch saves to keep the Highlanders comfortably out in front. Cheney scored for a sixth time in the final minute, effectively icing the game for a Radford win.
