Aggressive Baserunning Pays Off as Softball Takes Opener Against Runnin’ Bulldogs

RADFORD, Va. – The Highlanders used two instances of aggressive baserunning, and it paid off both times, to plate a pair of critical runs in a 3-0 shutout victory behind Dakota Redmon Friday afternoon.

PLAY BY PLAY
After Redmon began her day with a nifty double play in the first, the Highlanders offense went right to work in the bottom half. Peyton Simmons and Amanda Lee both singled and a fielder's choice allowed the bases to load up. Radford got the ball in play but ran into some unfortunate luck, but a walk by Hailey Scott gave Radford the early 1-0 lead.

Gardner-Webb had no answers in the second as Radford immediately got two runners in scoring position thanks to an advantageous error by the Runnin' Bulldogs. Three straight outs ended the threat, though, and Radford settled for the 1-0 lead into the third.

Redmon picked up two strikeouts in the third and stranded the tying run on third in the fourth. In the fourth, Radford's offense got aggressive for the first time in the game and was able to tack on a run. Amber Wolfe singled and Isabel Harrison was hit by a pitch to put two on.

An unfortunate liner back to the pitcher turned into a double play that wiped the runner at first. Simmons came up big, though, with a two-out hit to second. Taylor Higgins, pinch running, never stopped sprinting around third as Gardner-Webb tried to pick her off but instead the throw to third allowed to her to slide safely into home for the 2-0 lead.

Once again in the fifth the Highlanders kept sprinting for more runs. After Abby Bossler doubled with two outs, Myla Russell came in to run. Scott dropped a bloop single in between the right fielder and second baseman and Russell once again never broke stride gunning for home. The throw was in time, but the tag was late, and after a replay overturned the initial call Russell was ruled safe for the 3-0 lead.

Gardner-Webb was held scoreless in the sixth before rallying in the seventh. A hit by pitch and single put two on with one out and a bunt moved both runners into scoring position. Redmon dialed up one more strikeout, though, to end the threat and seal her seventh career shutout which now ranks tied for eighth most in program history.
