Baseball Falls in Slugfest Battle to Gardner-Webb

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford baseball program fell on the wrong end of a slugfest Saturday afternoon as Gardner-Webb evened the weekend series with a 15-10 final.

The Highlanders fell behind early as the Runnin' Bulldogs plated a pair of runs in the first, but the offense didn't wait long to respond. Junho Son and Hunter Keen both singled and both moved into scoring position off a groundout. After Breckin Nace walked to load the bases, a double play went awry and allowed two Radford runs to score.

Noah Toole and Brady Powell both took full advantage of the miscue as the pair hit back-to-back doubles that scored two more runs and vaulted Radford ahead 4-2. Matthew Lefevers tossed a bounce back second inning allowing no damage while the offense added on another run.

Son singled and Eli Hudgins drew a hit by pitch while Devin Parks came up clutch with the two-out RBI that scored Son and put Radford ahead 5-2. A pair of Gardner-Webb homers in the third evened the game at 5-5, though, forcing Andrew Steinhaus to enter from the bullpen before tossing a scoreless fourth inning.

Son stayed hot singling again in the bottom of the fourth with Keen quickly following with a single of his own. Hudgins doubled to bring home Son and a sacrifice fly by Nace reestablished Radford's lead at 7-5. Unsatisfied, Radford kept jamming the base paths and a fielder's choice brought Hudgins home for the 8-5 lead.

Gardner-Webb's offense kept firing and plated two runs in the fifth to pull back within one. After a two-out error gave Radford life in the bottom half, Hudgins tripled in a run and came home himself on a double by Nace to give Radford the 10-7 lead. Gardner-Webb struck back again, though, scoring three after an unfortunate error to tie the game at 10-all.

The Highlanders' offense would go quiet in the bottom of the sixth and Gardner-Webb struck with a solo homer to take their first lead since the first inning in the seventh. Radford's offense couldn't get rolling and after a four-run ninth by Gardner-Webb, the Highlanders' fate was sealed in the 15-10 finish.
