Seventh Inning Miracle and Sabo’s Senior Day Shutout Lead Radford to Series Sweep over Gardner-Webb

RADFORD, Va. – Radford got some Senior Day magic Saturday afternoon against Gardner-Webb getting an improbable seventh inning rally and a spectacular shutout from Madison Sabo to take both games of the doubleheader and sweep the weekend series.

GAME ONE
Morgan Cooper was excellent for the Highlanders in game one, giving up just one big swing to keep Radford in the game while the bats tried to get going. After a scoreless first, Gardner-Webb plated the pair of runs in the second off a ball that bounced off the top of the wall and was reversed after replay to be a home run and a 2-0 lead.

In the third Gardner-Webb threatened to add more with a lead off double, moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. Cooper got two straight outs, though, keeping it a 2-0 game. Both teams were quiet from there until the bottom of the fourth when Dakota Redmon roped a double. An unfortunate double play wiped that threat, keeping the Highlanders scoreless.

Cooper kept grinding and faced no major threats with scoreless fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Looking for answers, Radford called in senior Isabel Harrison, celebrating her senior day, and got just that. Harrison singled to begin a rally in the seventh.

Malli Groves singled to put two runners on, and Gardner-Webb's first big error of the inning would let Radford load the bases. After a fielder's choice brought Radford to its final out, a wild pitch brought home Radford's first run and made it a 2-1 game.

Amber Wolfe would get the ball in play, and another error brought home a run and tied the game 2-2. Kelley Feigen stepped up to the plate and played hero for the Highlanders once again. She hit a hard line shot that deflected off the third baseman and brought home the winning run. Radford's 3-2 win over Gardner-Webb marked their first walk off win of the season, and the first win when trailing after six innings.

GAME TWO
In the second game of the day, all eyes were on Sabo as she dazzled on senior day. She would immediately set the tone striking out two in a scoreless first while her offense immediately backed her up in the bottom half.

Simmons singled and Redmon quickly followed her with a single through the left side. A misplay by the left fielder allowed Simmons to come all the way home and Radford took the early 1-0 lead.

Sabo kept cruising, retiring the side in the second and third innings with two more strikeouts. In the bottom of the third, Radford tacked two more on to the lead thanks to some clutch hitting. With two outs and Simmons on first, Redmon snuck a double down the left field line that allowed Simmons to come all the way home and score. Groves also singled to right allowing Redmon to come home and make it a 3-0 lead.

Sabo was once again flawless in the fourth and while her streak of 14 batters retired to start the game was snapped with a double in the fifth, she quickly retired the next batter to preserve the shutout.

The Runnin' Bulldogs offense sparked trouble in the sixth as a double and single had runners on the corners with none out. Facing the top of the lineup, Sabo picked up her three biggest outs of the day in order without allowing a run to cross. In the seventh the leadoff hitter reached, but Sabo turned a double play that she started to help silence any rally for the eventual 3-0 victory. The shutout was just the second of the season for the senior.
