Radford Splits Doubleheader to Open Weekend at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Dakota Redmon's stellar shutout in game one gave Radford a 1-0 victory over Winthrop while a hot start wasn't enough in game two in a 4-3 loss as the Highlanders split their weekend opener doubleheader at the conference leaders.

GAME ONE
Friday's opener saw a battle between Radford and Winthrop's aces, and it was Dakota Redmon who would come out on top. Runs would be at a premium and Redmon was excellent early with clean first and second innings which included two strikeouts.

In the third, Radford's offense would score the lone run of the game. Isabel Harrison began the inning with a walk and a sacrifice bunt moved her into scoring position. Peyton Simmons also walked and Amanda Lee singled to load the bases. With two outs, and a full count, Malli Groves' patience at the plate paid off as she drew a walk for the 1-0 lead.

Redmon went back to work in the bottom of the third and struck out the side. Her strikeout streak went as far as four as she struck out the first batter of the fourth in another three up, three down inning. The Eagles got movement in the fifth as they singled twice for their first scoring opportunity. A foul out ended that threat, though, and kept Radford ahead 1-0.

After allowing no baserunners in the sixth, Winthrop rallied again in the seventh with a one out double to put the tying run in scoring position. An error made the threat worse to put runners on the corners. Redmon buckled down, fielded a groundout herself and forced a foul ball fly out to end the game 1-0 in Radford's favor.

GAME TWO
Radford's offense got off to a much better start in game two but went empty after the first as Winthrop scored four unanswered in a tight final. In that first inning, Simmons and Lee both reached base and Hailey Scott sent them home with a two-run single. Before the inning closed, Radford got one more off a sacrifice fly from Isabel Harrison for a 3-0 lead.

Morgan Cooper started well and worked around some baserunners to toss scoreless first, second and third innings. With two outs, the Eagles used two home runs to tie the game at 3-3 and force Radford to call the bullpen. Madison Sabo entered and limited any more damage.

In the fifth, the Eagles struck again with two outs on an infield single to take the 4-3 lead. Radford got two hits from Harrison and Kelley Feigen in the sixth but came up empty. In the seventh Simmons led the inning off with a single, but the team wasn't able to convert to try and extend the game as Winthrop held on in the 4-3 finish.
