Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Furman in First Round of Big South Tournament

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Making their return to the Big South Tournament for the first time since 2021, the Radford Highlanders women's lacrosse team were eliminated by Furman, 15-5, on Tuesday night at Paladin Stadium.

KEY STATS
  • A four-goal scoring run by Furman in the second quarter, followed up with a 6-1 run to start the second half, doomed the Highlanders' chances at advancing to the conference semifinals.
  • Ava LaManna did her best to keep the Highlanders in it, making 14 saves in a losing effort. The junior finishes her junior season just three saves shy of tying the all-time saves record in program history.
  • Molly O'Brien led the Highlanders with two goals.
  • Furman dominated most stat categories, including shots (45-21), draw controls (17-5), and caused turnovers (13-8).
PLAY BY PLAY
The Paladins won the opening draw and scored a quick one, 16 seconds in. A few minutes later, Cassidy Deierlein sent a free position shot high in Radford's first great scoring chance. Furman responded for a second tally, then turned away an Alyssa Yost free position shot. The Paladins took advantage of two cards awarded to Radford players to score for a third time with 5:01 left in the first. Mady Cheney won a drew control after the third goal, and O'Brien found the net to put Radford on the board with 4:08 left. Furman got a quick answer to go pack up three, but Maggie Wisniewski scored in the closing seconds of the first to cut the deficit to two goals after one.

The Highlanders seemed to be back in it early in the second. After a LaManna save, a quick clear turned into a goal for O'Brien on a great pass from Maddy Driscoll to make the deficit just one. Furman got ahead by two midways through the quarter before finding the net three more times in the final four minutes to make it 8-3 at the half.

Two saves by LaManna early in the third helped provide an answer for Radford in the second half. Yost also scored a gem of a goal, cutting across the middle before a behind the back flick to beat the Furman goalkeeper with 10:01 left in the third. Unfortunately, that's as close as it would get for the Highlanders. Furman finished with four goals to lead by eight after three periods before getting a running clock going in the fourth. Sloppy play characterized the final 15 minutes, with Radford committing seven turnovers and Furman also giving away the ball four times.
