Softball Hangs Tough, Ultimately Fall to #12 Virginia Tech

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball program faced a tough opponent in #12 Virginia Tech Tuesday night and came up short in the 7-2 final despite some solid defense, pitching and productive hitting.

PLAY BY PLAY
Madison Sabo earned the start for the Highlanders and was solid through the first two frames before the Hokies would break things open in the third. Sabo gave up a lead off homer, but buckled down the rest of the inning to keep the score at 1-0 and stranded a lead off double in the second.

Dakota Redmon picked up Radford's first hit of the day in the first, but the offense remained scoreless through the early goings. The Hokies plated five in the third during their biggest inning of the day to go ahead 6-0.

The Highlanders would strike back in the bottom half of the third to break open their end of the scoring. Peyton Simmons began the inning with an infield single, and Amanda Lee singled down the left field line to put two on. A Redmon flyout moved Simmons to third and a sacrifice fly by Groves brought the run home.

After entering in the third, Morgan Cooper kept dealing for the Highlanders with a three up, three down fourth. The Hokies added a run in the fifth via a solo homer, but over 4.2 innings of work it was the only run Cooper would surrender against a dangerous offense.

Before the game went final, Radford's offense would rally in the seventh. Grace Hogie began the inning with a single and Simmons also singled to put two on. After a groundout moved the pair into scoring position, Groves added another RBI with a hard hit to short. Abby Bossler would walk to load the bases and bring the tying run to the on-deck circle, but the rally came to an end as Virginia Tech held on for the 7-2 final.
