COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Radford Highlanders women's soccer team put together a few opportunities late to try and tie things, but it was Tennessee Tech who held off the late challenges to take a 1-0 win over Radford on Thursday night at Tech Soccer Field.
KEY STATS
PLAY BY PLAY
Right out of the gates, it appeared that Ciaira Anderson had found the back of the net in the fifth minute. However, her attack was ruled offsides, the first of nine called against the Highlanders throughout the evening. In the 10th minute, Tennessee Tech's Pressley Williams nearly had a breakaway chance, but her shot flew wide right of Radvanyi and the far post to keep things goalless early.
Arguably, Radford's best chance came in the 16th minute. Lilly Clayton played a beautiful ball in the middle of the field to Brooke Pearson. The junior had a great strike with the right foot, but an even better save and deflection by Laila McNamee kept things even. It would prove to be McNamee's only save of the evening, as Tennessee Tech brought in Drew Tolley to play goalkeeper in the second half.
Hope Ku-Dipietro picked up Radford's first yellow card of the season a bit later in the first half, after taking down a Tennessee Tech midfielder in the 24th minute. The Golden Eagles earned the contests' first corner kick a bit later, which turned into a string of chances from the corner (4 in a row). The Golden Eagles failed to get any great chances from them, as the Radford defenders did a terrific job at keeping the ball from the goal area. The Highlanders earned a free kick in the attacking half with a couple minutes left in the first, but Ryane Devlin's attempt sailed high and wide for a Tennessee Tech goal kick, leading to a 0-0 score at the break.
The Golden Eagles broke through in the 51st minute with a great strike by Soutuyo from beyond the 18-yard box. She dribbled right and struck with the right foot undefended. Radvanyi made a leaping effort, but the ball sailed past her outstretched glove and bounced straight down from the crossbar for the game's lone score.
Radford piled on pressure to try and score an equalizer the rest of the way. After taking a corner kick short, Mallory Harmison's cross nearly floated to the top right corner of the net. However, a swiping save by Tolley kept the Golden Eagles ahead. Katie Purnell got a shot off with the left foot that went through the legs of a Tennessee Tech defender but was grabbed by Tolley. With a couple minutes left, Purnell found fellow senior Ava Kertgate, who sent a shot across the box. Tolley got a piece of it, and it was cleared by the Tennessee Tech back line on the deflection to end the threat. One last offsides call in the closing seconds ended Radford's hopes at earning a draw in their first road match of the season.
SOHRABI QUOTABLE
"I thought we played well tonight," head coach Ben Sohrabi added postgame. "Especially in the defensive and the middle third when we built the ball. We had good possession but a lot of credit to Tennessee Tech for how they defended in the defensive third. They were a tough team to break down. It's always tough to win on the road, especially against an NCAA Tournament participate from last year. But I think we need to find a couple of key plays in the game to get a draw or win."

The Highlanders are back at home next Thursday, August 27th, welcoming Emory & Henry to Cupp Stadium. Their final game against a non-Division I opponent is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
