Highlanders Fall in Pair of Matches at Kansas City Klassic

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Radford volleyball program fell in a pair of matches Friday at the Kansas City Klassic, falling to the weekend hosts Kansas City 3-1 before also dropping a 3-0 match to Drake.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (KANSAS CITY)

Oliva Ryno and Taryn Roberts led Radford's attack with nine kills each while Aubrey Hatch was the Highlanders most efficient hitter with six kills on a .313 clip.
Mia Jannazzo continues to bolster Radford's defense as she finished with 23 digs. She also accounted for two of Radford's three aces.
Lea Gage came close to a double-double as she recorded nine digs to go with a team high 32 assists.
Attack errors plagued Radford in the match as the team totaled 27 to Kansas City's 15. The 27 errors and .092 hitting percentage were both season lows.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (DRAKE)

Roberts led Radford's attack once again with 11 kills while Aubrey Hatch also tallied seven.
Hatch also finished with 10 digs while Jannazzo finished with another 20+ dig showing.
Rose Whitemountain earned a pair of aces in back-to-back fashion.
After Drake started hot hitting .438 in the first set, Radford adjusted and pulled their opponent's hitting clip below .300 in the latter two sets.

PLAY BY PLAY (KANSAS CITY)
The two squads looked even through the opening set as the set score reflected that in thin margins throughout. Early on Radford got offense via three kills from Katrina Miller while Addison Cunnagin also added a pair of kills. A kill from Roberts pulled Radford close at 14-3 but Kansas City would hold their slim lead the whole way. An ace from Macie Potter and more kills from Cunnagin and Maja Bochenek kept Radford firing, but after going down 23-21 Kansas City was able to hold on in the 25-21 first set win.

A huge run to end the second set would highlight the match for the Highlanders. The set was the team's best of the match as Radford hit .214 with five kills each from Ryno and Hatch. Service errors also hurt Kansas City, of which they had five to Radford's two.

After falling behind by as much as six through the midway portion of the set, Radford would storm back thanks to two big runs. The first began with the team down 19-13 where Ryno, Bochenek and Hatch would pave the way with kills in a 6-1 run that pulled the match within 20-19. Radford fell behind 23-21 against but would rattle off the final four points of the set after a timeout behind kills from Potter, Hatch and Roberts to win it 25-21 and even the match at 1-1.

From there, offensive struggles would hurt Radford over the final two sets that saw lopsided final results. The hosts kept firing, hitting .360 and .250 in sets three and four but Radford's sputtered at just .139 and -.059. Roberts would come alive tallying seven of her nine total kills in the match over those final two sets, but Kansas City took them both 25-18 and 25-17 to earn the 3-1 decision.

PLAY BY PLAY (DRAKE)
The opening set would see Drake continue their hot streak after downing Utah Valley 3-0 earlier in the day as they jumped out to a 10-5 lead. Early on it was Roberts who fueled the offense with five kills in the first set. Her attack helped Radford keep things close and the match back up at 12-12 before a 5-1 run saw Drake vault back ahead. Radford didn't recover that deficit over the remainder of the set, allowing Drake to jump ahead 1-0 with a 25-19 first set final.

The Highlanders would slow things down in set two as the two squads traded points with neither side drawing a large advantage until the end of the set. Cunnagin took the team lead for kills in the set with four but three aces and 16 kills would see Drake take another set. The set was tied as late as 19-19, but Drake once again put together an extended 5-1 run to take the 2-0 lead 25-20.

In set three Radford looked to make a comeback and did build a lead early in the set behind a renewed effort from Hatch and Roberts who combined for eight kills. The team led 18-14 late but a Drake timeout flipped the tide and would eventually seal the match. Out of that break, Drake scored four unanswered to tie and eventually built a two-point advantage. That lead lasted through a pair of Radford timeouts as they won set three 25-21 and the match 3-0.
