Brett Self was announced as an assistant coach for Radford women's basketball in May 2013.
“Brett is a young, passionate coach I have known for a few years now,” McGuire said. “I have watched him on the road over the past three years and admired his work ethic. He has high integrity and is one that I will rely on heavily with different aspects of our program. Brett is a great fit, and I am excited about what he is going to bring to our program right away.”
In his role with the Highlanders, Self will serve as the scouting coordinator. His other primary duties will be post player development, recruiting, academics and scheduling.

I have a great deal of respect for Coach McGuire, and I look forward to the future of Radford women's basketball."
Self comes to Radford after one year on the sidelines as assistant coach of the Belmont women’s basketball program. The Bruins compiled an 18-14 overall record, which included an 11-5 ledger in Ohio Valley Conference action. Under his watch, Belmont advanced to the 2013 Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI), which was the Bruins’ first postseason appearance since 2007.
Before Belmont, Self spent two seasons at Wagner College in Staten Island, N.Y. As a young, first-time assistant, he served as recruiting coordinator, defensive coordinator and post development coach for the Seahawks.
Prior to Wagner, Self worked as a graduate assistant at Auburn University during one of the most successful seasons in program history. In 2008-09, Auburn was the regular season SEC champion and coached by the SEC Coach of the Year and former Olympic head coach, Nell Fortner. The Tigers finished the campaign with a 30-4 record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Self graduated from Auburn in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Business / Marketing before earning his Master’s in Adult Education. He played four years at Hooper Academy, helping his team win the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) Championship in 2004. Self was also a nominee for the Jimmy Hitchcock Top Christian Athlete Award.
The Pintlala, Ala. native is the son of Darrell and Barbara Self. Darrell is a legendary high school head coach in the AISA Hall of Fame.
