Towson Rallies Past Radford, 59-53

TOWSON, Md. – Towson's Shanae Baker-Brice scored 19 second half points helping the Tigers erase an early 14-point second half deficit defeat Radford, 59-53, Tuesday evening from the Towson Center. Sophomore Taleia Moton (Fort Washington, Md./Suitland) paced the Highlanders with 13 points, while Baker-Brice led all scorers with 22 points.

The Highlanders took their second 14-point lead (35-21) of the second half at 19:28 on a basket by junior Charron Leeper (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Shaw), who finished with eight points. With the score 39-28 at 17:37, Towson went on a 16-6 run to cut the Highlanders' lead to 45-44 with 8:24 on the clock.

Senior Johnette Walker (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) ended the run with a steal and an old-fashioned three-point play at 7:54 to push Radford's lead to 48-44. Baker-Brice responded with a three-pointer and jumper to give Towson its first lead since 16:39 of the first half.

Walker hit one-of-two free throws to knot the game at 49 with 5:44 left. After the two teams combined for six turnovers and just one shot attempt over the next two minutes, Baker-Brice drained the game-winning three from the corner to put the Tigers up 52-49 with 3:26 on the clock.

The Highlanders had their opportunities to cut it to one but were unable to capitalize. The Tigers made 6-of-7 free throws to ice the game.

Walker finished with 10 points, eight assists and six steals. She also hit four free throws to bring her career total to 355, second all-time at Radford. She needs five more to break the career record. Senior Vandy Pullen (Arlington, Va./Maine) and sophomore Ciara Hayes (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) led Radford with six rebounds apiece.

Radford used a 13-2 run over the final 7:35 of the first half to take a 31-19 lead into halftime. During the run, five different Highlanders hit a bucket and their defense held the Tigers scoreless for the final six minutes. Moton paced Radford with nine points and three other Highlanders added six points apiece. Katrina Wheeler led Towson with eight points and 11 rebounds.

After Baker-Brice hit a three at the 16:39 mark, Radford went on a 12-4 run, jumpstarted by junior Davida Dodson's (Silver Spring, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) triple to take a 16-9 lead at 11:45. Back-to-back buckets by the Tigers' Omara Parker and Wheeler cut the Highlanders' advantage to 18-17 with eight minutes on the clock.

Walker responded with a reverse layup on the next possession and after two missed freebees, Dodson, toeing the line, banked in a jumper from top of the three-point arc to start the run. Wheeler hit a layup at 6:09. That would be the last bucket for the Tigers, as the Highlanders scored the final nine points of the half.

Radford will head across the country to Moraga, Calif. for the Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 28 and 29 hosted by Saint Mary's College. The Highlanders open with Indiana on Friday and LaSalle on Saturday. Both games tip at 8 p.m. EST.
