Women's Basketball Defeated by VCU

RADFORD, Va. – Radford could not overcome a quick VCU start and a combined 41 points from Quanitra Hollingsworth and Kita Waller, falling 74-51, Friday evening from Peters Hall. Senior Johnette Walker (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) and junior Charron Leeper (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Shaw) scored 15 and 11 points for the Highlanders.

Hollingsworth (21 points) and Waller (20 points) each went 8-for-10 from the floor and grabbed seven and five rebounds, respectively. Hollingsworth also had four steals and two blocks. D'Andra Moss came off the bench and recorded a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double for the Rams (7-2).

Walker led the Highlanders (1-8) with five assists and three steals and also tied for a team-high six rebounds. Leeper tied a career-high with her 11 points, going 4-of-8 from the field. Junior Davida Dodson (Silver Spring, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) chipped in with a career-best nine-points.

VCU raced out to 19-4 lead behind some strong shooting and eight points from Waller. The Rams started 7-for-8 from the field and 8-of-11 during the entire run that gave them their 15-point advantage 8:43 into the game.

Radford finally found its stroke and used a 10-1 spurt over a 2:33 span to get within 20-14 with just over eight minutes to go in the half. Leeper started it with a jumper and Dodson capped it off with back-to-back triples.

The Rams slowly pushed their lead back to 10 points and used a 10-2 run over the final 2:30 to take a 35-19 lead into halftime. Hollingsworth had 12 points and Waller eight to pace the Rams. Dodson led the Highlanders with eight points. Radford shot 29.6 percent from the field, while VCU was at 50 percent.

Early in the second half, the Highlanders cut the margin to 14 (37-23) after four straight points from Walker. However, the Rams put the game away with a 16-1 run, giving them a 53-24 advantage just 5:19 into the half. VCU led by as much as 32 points (65-33), but Radford was able to outscore the Rams, 18-9 over the final 6:52 to make the final margin, 74-51.

VCU shot 44 percent (26-59) from the field and 62 percent (18-29) from the line, while outrebounding Radford, 48-27, including, 26-11 in the second half. Sophomore Denay Wood (Bailey's Crossroads, Va./Annandale) tied Walker with six caroms. The Highlanders shot 35 percent (16-46) from the field and just 56 percent (14-25) from the charity stripe.

Radford will play its eighth road game in 10 contests when it travels to Navy on Monday, Dec. 21 for a 7 p.m. tip.
