MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Alex Ruoff scored a career-high 38 points and broke West Virginia's single-game record for three-point field goals with nine, to lead the Mountaineers to an 89-54 victory over Radford in non-conference men's basketball action Tuesday evening at WVU Coliseum.
Ruoff connected on 12-of-19 attempts from the floor and missed just five of his 14 tries from behind the arc to pace three Mountaineers in double digits.
West Virginia (9-2) controlled the rebounding column, 48-31, including 23 offensive boards, which led to 35 second chance points. To go along with their work on the glass, the Mountaineers forced 25 Radford (3-8) miscues, turning them into 17 points.
“West Virginia was an extremely physical team that dominated us on the backboard with 23 offensive rebounds and disrupted our offense forcing 25 turnovers,” said Radford head coach Brad Greenberg. “Taking care of the basketball, offensive rebounding, and shutting down Ruoff were three keys we focused on entering this game, unfortunately we were 0-for-3.”
As a team, West Virginia nailed 12-of-30 from downtown for a 40 percent clip.
Artsiom Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus), who scored Radford's first nine points of the second half, cut the deficit to 11 (37-26), 37 seconds into the final stanza, but the Mountaineers responded with another lengthy spurt to put the game out of reach.
Martell McDuffy (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) and
Amir Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley) led the Highlanders with 14 points each, while Parakhouski added 13.
Radford, which attempted 26 fewer shots than the Mountaineers, shot 40 percent (18-45) from the floor.
West Virginia closed the opening half on a 15-4 run to head into the break with a 37-24 advantage.
After a Johnson three-pointer put Radford in front 13-9 at the 14:37 mark, the Mountaineers scored six unanswered to grab the lead for good.
The first 20 minutes of action was highlighted by Ruoff, who canned five of his club's six buckets from downtown to lead all players with 15 points at intermission.
Radford returns from Christmas break Saturday evening with a 7 p.m. contest against Shenandoah at Peters Hall. The Mountaineers will also be back in action Dec. 27 when they travel to Columbus, Ohio to battle Ohio State.
