Highlanders Cruise Past Presbyterian, 75-36

Rachel Morris Scores Career-High 13 Point in First Collegiate Start

CLINTON, S.C. – Five Radford players scored in double figures and its defense held Presbyterian to 33 percent shooting as it cruised to a 75-36 victory at the Templeton Center, Monday evening. Senior Rachel Morris (Stanley, Va./Page County) netted a career-high 13 points in her first collegiate start and senior Johnette Walker (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) led all scorers with 19 points and tallied four steals.

“I was proud of our team effort tonight,” said head coach Tajama Ngongba. “Presbyterian is a talented team that plays well at home. We came out very focused and enthusiastic helping us pick up a solid road win.”

The Highlanders (4-12, 3-2 Big South) shot 47.5 percent and hit a season-high nine three-pointers, finishing at a 47.4 percent clip. Radford also shot a season-best, 80 percent (8-10) from the charity stripe and outrebounded PC, 42-23, its largest margin of the season. On the defensive side Radford forced 20 turnovers and recorded nine steals and only turned it over a season-low 10 times.

Walker also had three assists, moving her into sole possession of second place on Radford's career list with 470.

Kymesha Alston (Hampton, Va./Manhattan) finished with 16 points, 11 in the second half, and a team-best eight rebounds. Senior Vandy Pullen (Arlington, Va./Maine) and sophomore Taleia Moton (Fort Washington, Md./Suitland) were also in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively.

Kaitlin Moore led the Blue Hose (2-13, 0-4 Big South) with 14 points.

Behind hot three-point shooting and stifling defense Radford took a 40-18 lead into halftime. The Highlanders hit 8-of-13 trifectas and held the Blue to just 7-of-31 from the field. Walker and Morris combined to go 7-for-9 from downtown. Walker was a perfect 4-for-4, tallying a half-high 13 points. Morris went 3-of-5 for nine points, surpassing her career-high in the first three minutes of the game.

Radford jumped out to a 17-7 lead at 11:11 behind seven points from Walker and six from Morris. The Highlanders slowly upped their lead to as much as 23 points (39-16) with 2:05 left in the half before going into the lockerroom up 40-18. Radford shot 48 percent from the field and outrebounded the Blue Hose, 19-13.

The second half saw Alston score 11 of Radford's first 15 points as the Highlanders pushed their lead to a comfortable 30 points (55-25) 5:38 into the stanza and cruised on to the victory.

The Highlanders, coming off a four-game road swing, return home for the first time since Jan. 5 when they host Coastal Carolina on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m. It also marks Radford's return to the newly renovated Dedmon Center.
