RADFORD, Va. -- With the New Year comes a new beginning for Radford women's basketball. The Highlanders start their 23rd season of Big South hoops when they host the Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb on Monday evening at 7 p.m. in Peters Hall.
Game Notes
The Highlanders and head coach
Tajama Ngongba look to start fresh and erase the memory of a tough non-conference slate when they hit the hardwood against the Bulldogs. Radford, playing in its first back-to-back home games of the season, is coming off a 68-45 defeat to American in its final non-conference game of the 2008-09 campaign. Sophomore
Taleia Moton (Fort Washington, Md./Suitland) paced Radford with a season-high and game-best 17 points.
Gardner-Webb is coming off a 55-42 loss at Liberty in its first ever Big South game on Saturday. Margaret Roundtree led the Bulldogs with 10 points. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Bulldogs, who will play their first four conference games on the road. It also spoiled the return for former Liberty head coach Rick Reeves, who is now in his fifth season with the Bulldogs.
Radford has been very successful in conference openers, posting a 16-6 record. The Highlanders, who opened the season on the road the past two years, return home where they are 13-5 in league openers, all in the Dedmon Center. This will be the first ever Big South game in Peters Hall.
The series is tied at 1-1 with both teams winning on the road. Gardner-Webb won the last matchup, a 60-58 overtime triumph in Radford on Dec. 12, 2004. Radford won the first meeting, 89-63 in Boiling Springs on Dec. 21, 2003.
