CONWAY, S.C. – Despite a career-high 16 kills and .393 hitting percentage from
Megan McWhorter (Newport News, Va. / Peninsula Catholic), Radford opened its four-match road trip with a 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 25-16) setback to Coastal Carolina in Big South volleyball action Friday at Kimbel Arena.
The loss drops the Highlanders to 10-9 overall and 1-3 in the league, while Coastal Carolina moves to 8-8 and 2-1.
Freshman
Emily Hayes (Bartlett, Ill. / Bartlett) joined McWhorter in double-digits, contributing her fourth straight 10-kill performance with 11 on 30 swings (300). Defensively, Radford's
Katelyn Meeks (Richmond, Va. / Mills Godwin) hit the 10-dig plateau for the 15th time this season and seventh in as many outings with 16.
After Radford reeled off four unanswered to cut the deficit to 20-19, the Chanticleers scored five straight points of their own, highlighted by four kills and a service ace to take the opener, 25-19.
Trailing 20-15 in game two, the Highlanders closed on a 10-3 streak capped off by consecutive kills from
Carly Fleming (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) and Hayes to even the match at the break.
Led by Fleming's four kills and two blocks, Radford found the floor with 17 of its 38 attempts in game two for a .289 attack percentage.
Game three was no different from the previous two as it was Coastal that finished with a flurry this time and used a .400 clip to grab a 2-1 lead.
In game four, the Chanticleers scored the first five points of the frame and never allowed Radford closer than three the rest of the way en route to a 25-16 decision.
Sierra Livesay paced three Chanticleers in double figures with 16 kills. Coastal Carolina's Meagan Tracey and Megan Pollard led all players with 43 assists and 21 digs, respectively.
Coastal Carolina outhit Radford .270 to .190 and finished with a 7-4 edge in total blocks. Both clubs served up five aces each.
The Highlanders will continue their four-match swing away from home with a 2 p.m. contest at Winthrop Saturday afternoon.
