HIGH POINT, N.C. – Laura Waddell (Lynchburg, Va. / E.C. Glass) found the floor with a season-high 16 kills and
Megan McWhorter (Newport News, Va. / Peninsula Catholic) added 13 to lead Radford to a 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 12-25, 25-22) victory over High Point in Big South volleyball action at the Millis Center Wednesday evening.
The win ends a four-match skid for the Highlanders as they improve to 12-16 overall and 2-10 in the league with both triumphs coming against the Panthers. The loss drops High Point to 13-14 and 3-8.
To go along with Waddell and McWhorter's double-digit performances,
Desiree Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) recorded 38 assists and 15 digs for the 12th double-double of her freshman campaign. Defensively,
Katelyn Meeks (Richmond, Va. / Mills Godwin) contributed her 20th 10-dig effort of 2009 with a season-high 29 digs, while
Kiley Kent (Indianapolis, Ind. / Warren Central) and
Lauren Clary (Roanoke, Va. / Cave Spring) added 13 and 11, respectively.
In game one, Radford raced out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back grabbing an early 1-0 advantage with a 25-17 win. Waddell led the way for the Highlanders in the first frame with five of her clubs 12 kills.
Just like the opener, Radford put the Panthers in an early game-two deficit, 11-5, but High Point responded with a lengthy run of its own to grab its first lead of the set, 17-16. With the second tied 19-19, the Highlanders closed with six of the next nine points to take game two, 25-22, and a two games to one lead at the break.
Through two games, Waddell led all players with 10 kills on just 12 attempts for an impressive .750 hitting percentage.
High Point wasted little time forcing a fourth game as the Panthers used a 12-1 flurry to propel them to a 25-12 triumph in game three.
After each team went on lengthy spurts to find themselves deadlocked 21-21 in game four, Radford got consecutive kills from
Mariah Nussbaum (Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade Julienne),
Carly Fleming (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) and Clary to put the match out of reach.
Stephanie Wallin paced the Panthers with 18 kills, while Holly Fong set up 40 of her club's 50 kills and Julie Hershkowitz picked up a match-high 34 digs.
As a team, Radford outhit High Point .155 to .126 but trailed in the total blocks column, 8-5.
The Highlanders return to action Friday, Oct. 30 when they host Winthrop in a 7 p.m. match at the Dedmon Center.
