RADFORD, Va. – Coastal Carolina hit .412 in the fourth game to hold off Radford and seal up a 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 28-26, 25-22) win in Big South volleyball on Saturday afternoon at the Dedmon Center.
The Chanticleers (15-11, 8-4 Big South) connected on 19 of 34 attempts in game four, with just five errors, to edge the Highlanders (12-18, 2-12) in the decisive game.
Freshman
Desiree Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) led the Highlanders with a balanced effort that included 31 assists on Radford's 39 kills, eight digs, three service aces and five kills.
Sophomore libero
Katelyn Meeks (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) had 18 digs for Radford, while senior
Lauren Clary (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) and junior
Laura Waddell (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) paced the Highlanders with eight kills each.
Coastal Carolina was led by a pair of double-digit kill performances, as Chelsy Kimes delivered 23 while Megan Bickford knocked down 13. Both Kimes and Bickford hit better than 30 percent for the afternoon, with Bickford connecting on 43 percent of her strikes.
Four players hit double-figure digs for the Chanticleers, led by Megan Pollard's 19, while Kimes had 14 for a double-double.
Radford never trailed in the first game and held Coastal Carolina to an .026 attack percentage, winning 25-18. The Chanticleers trimmed the Radford lead to two, 12-10, before the Highlanders outscored Coastal Carolina 13-8 the rest of the way. Radford had three aces in the game one win.
In the second game, Kimes and Bickford banged home 10 of Coastal Carolina's 14 kills, leading the Chanticleers past Radford 25-18. Coastal Carolina built its largest lead of the second game, at 20-11, thanks to a 6-1 run and a block from Bickford and Meagan Tracey to give the Chanticleers a nine-point cushion.
For Radford, Waddell came off the bench for six game-three kills, but the 18-kill effort for Coastal Carolina was too much to overcome in a 28-26 Chanticleer win. The Highlanders led game three, 21-18, before the Chanticleers put away seven of the next 10 points to tie the game at 25-25 and eventually win the game.
Coastal Carolina's big effort in the final game was needed to pull away in a tight game that included eight ties and five lead changes. The last swap came on an attack error by Radford that made the score 23-22, Coastal Carolina. Then, Amanda Russell's service ace gave the Chanticleers the late two-point lead and all but sealed up the match.
Radford concludes the home portion of its schedule next Saturday (Nov. 7), hosting Charleston Southern at 2 p.m.
