Moss and Big First Half Run Key VCU's Win Over Womens' Basketball, 70-53

RICHMOND. Va. – Juniors Denay Wood (Bailey's Crossroads, Va./Annandale) and Kaylyn Crosier (South Charleston, W.Va./South Charleston) netted career highs for Radford, but D'Andra Moss scored a game-high 23 points and VCU used a big first half run to earn a, 70-53 victory Saturday afternoon from the Seigel Center.

Wood and Crosier paced the Highlanders (1-7) with 16 and 13 points respectively with redshirt senior Kymesha Alston (Hampton, Va./Manhattan) chipping in with 11 points. Moss was 9-for-14 from the field and pulled down a game-best seven rebounds.

Keyed by a 20-0 run over an 8:32 span in the first half, VCU (4-2) took a 38-17 lead into halftime. The Rams shot 50 percent (15-30) from the floor and were led by Moss' 17 points. They also turned 12 Highlander turnovers into 19 of those points.

After a short jumper by Wood gave Radford a 7-6 lead at 15:35, VCU scored the next 20 points, 12 by Moss, to take a commanding 26-7 lead with 7:33 remaining in the first half.

Alston ended the drought with a pair of free throws at 7:03.The Rams extended their lead to as much as 24 before taking the 38-17 lead into the break. Radford, which hit three of its first five shots of the game, went into a 0-9 rut and finished the half shooting just 28.6 percent (6-21).

Wood opened the half scoring seven of Radford's first nine points, keying a 9-4 run to get the Highlanders within, 42-26 at the 13:37 mark.

The Rams quickly pushed their lead back to 20 points and extended it to 22 on two occasions, the last at 9:29 (52-30). Late in the game, Radford got within 15 points twice, but VCU responded with a triple each time to stymie a comeback attempt.

Radford shot lights out in the second half, hitting 56 percent of its shots and finished the game at a 43.5 percent clip. The Rams shot 49.1 percent and held a commanding, 37-21 edge on the glass. Wood and junior Brooke McElroy (Richmond, Va./Monmouth) led Radford with four apiece.

After a break for finals, Radford makes a brief return home for a contest with Davidson on Friday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m.
