RADFORD, Va. –
Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) scored 25 points and
Laz Trifunovic (Belgrade, Serbia) added 22 to lead four Radford players in double figures, as the Highlanders rolled past Roanoke College 99-67 on Sunday afternoon at the Dedmon Center.
Parakhouski had the 14th 20-point game of his career and his seventh this season, hitting 11 of 13 shots. His 18 rebounds gave him a double-double in each of Radford's (5-3) games this season.
Trifunovic posted his best outing with the Highlanders after transferring from Binghamton, shooting 10-of-14 and grabbing 11 rebounds. Since playing in his first Radford game Dec. 3 at Winthrop, Trifunovic has netted double figures in three of four games.
“We're definitely finding a rhythm now,” Trifunovic said. “Every time you add a piece to the puzzle, there will be some kind of challenge, and you've got to get used to it.
“I'm confident, and Art will agree, that once we feel comfortable with each other we can really start to roll.”
“It's good to play with Laz,” Parakhouski said. “We have a big line now so it's easier to rebound, box out, play defense, and score now.”
Trifunovic has started each of the last four games after missing the first four with a wrist injury.
“Laz is a talented guy,” head coach
Brad Greenberg said. “He can score inside and outside, and he can drive it. I'm looking forward to seeing him at full strength where he can really take it to the basket, both right or left.”
Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) contributed 18 points to become the 25th 1,000-point scorer in Radford history.
Amir Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley) scored a season-high 11 for the Highlanders.
Radford shot 50.7 percent for the game (38 of 75), highlighted by a 58.8 percent (20 of 34) performance in the first half.
Trifunovic (15 points) and Parakhouski (14) combined for 30 of Radford's 51 first half points, as the Highlanders scored 24 in the paint on the way to a 51-27 lead at halftime. Radford used a 28-7 run over 11:25 in the opening period, fueled by nine points from Trifunovic and eight from Parahouski, to open up a 47-21 lead at the 1:51 mark on the Maroons (4-3).
“We did a solid job rebounding at both ends in that first half,” Greenberg said. “Our defense was solid and we really established ourselves in the paint by scoring a lot around the basket.”
In addition, the Highlanders outrebounded Roanoke 24-11 in the first half. For the game, Radford pulled down 55 rebounds to 29 for the Maroons.
“Our size and depth up front was a big factor in us opening up that nice lead early in the game,” Greenberg said.
During the game-changing run, Lynch-Flohr's jumper at 8:09 that made it 27-14 in favor of Radford was the 1,000th point of his career.
Radford opened up its largest lead of the game at 35 points on
Cole Wilder's (Wytheville, Va./George Wythe) three-pointer with 5:06 remaining to make it 91-56.
Melvin Felix and Matt Crizer scored 11 each for the Division III Maroons, pacing five players in double figures. Roanoke hit 10 of its 28 of its attempts (35.7 percent) from the three-point line.
Following a week-long break for final exams, the Highlanders return to the court on Saturday (Dec. 19) when they travel to James Madison.
