Strong Second Half Leads Radford to 11th Straight League Road Win, 61-57

BOX SCORE

CLINTON, S.C. –
Along with shooting 50 percent and erasing an 11-point deficit in the second half, Radford placed four players in double figures to defeat Presbyterian 61-57 and record its 11th straight Big South road victory Saturday evening at the Templeton Center.

“We played a very strong defensive second half,” said Radford head coach Brad Greenberg. “And that was the reason we pulled out another tough road win.”

Trailing 41-30 at the 18:05 mark, Radford (4-2, 2-0 Big South) outscored the Blue Hose 26-8 over the next 13:30 to grab a 56-49 advantage on Art Parakhouski's (Minsk, Belarus) layup from Amir Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley).

Laz Trifunovic's (Belgrade, Serbia) jumper from the right wing with 8:12 left gave the Highlanders their first lead of the contest, 49-47. After Jake Troyli evened the score at 49-49, Evan Faulkner's (Sandy Hook, Ky./Elliott Country) second three-pointer of the contest put Radford up for good.

For the eighth straight outing and 23rd of his career, Parakhouski charted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Trifunovic also added 13 points and pulled down nine boards, while seniors Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) and Phillip Martin (Roanoke, Va./Roanoke Catholic) joined their fellow starters in double digits with 10 points each.

“Placing four players in double figures is the balance we're looking for,” Greenberg said

Presbyterian (2-7, 0-2 Big South), which hit its first five attempts of the game, including three from long range, was held to just 28.1 percent in the second half. Both clubs finished an identical 38.3 percent (23 of 60) from the field.

With Parakhouski and Johnson on the bench with two fouls each, Presbyterian went on a 10-2 run capped off by back-to-back treys from Walt Allen and Ryan Hargrave to stretch its lead to 34-20. Forced to play with three freshmen due to foul trouble, Radford responded with seven unanswered, including a Faulkner triple, to cut the deficit to 34-27.

Jamal Curry (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud School) and Evan Faulkner gave us a late first half boost,” Greenberg said.

But Troyli's jumper with five seconds remaining in the half gave the Blue Hose a 36-27 lead at the break.

Presbyterian hit 50 percent of its attempts from the floor (14 of 28) and behind the arc (6 of 12) in the first 20 minutes of action, while holding the Highlanders to just 29.4 percent.

“Presbyterian played exceptional in the first half at both ends of the floor," Greenberg said. "It was a real test of our mental toughness to be able to compose ourselves and get back into the game.”

Chase Holmes and Troyli were the only Blue Hose in double figures finishing with 18 and 10 points, respectively.

Radford will conclude its longest road trip of the campaign on Wednesday evening with an 8 p.m. (EST) nationally-televised (ESPNU) contest at top-ranked Kansas.
