RADFORD, Va. – Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) led all scorers with 21 points and fellow junior
Phillip Martin (Roanoke, Va./Roanoke Catholic) added a career-high 16 to lead Radford to a 78-61 win over Presbyterian in Big South men's basketball action Saturday evening at the Dedmon Center.
Along with it being the Highlanders' fourth straight victory, it was their ninth in the last 10 contests as they improve to 13-10 overall and remain tied for first in the league at 10-2.
Parakhouski finished 8-for-11 from the floor and made all five of his attempts from the line to record his third 20-point game of the season. Martin missed just one of his five tries from the field, while going a perfect 2-of-2 from deep and connecting on all six of his free throws. Also in double figures for Radford was
Amir Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Quaker Valley) and
Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) scoring 15 and 13 points, respectively.
“Once again
Joey Lynch-Flohr and Art Parakhouski established an inside presences and
Phillip Martin had a stellar game,” said Radford second-year head coach Brad Greenberg.
The Highlanders opened the second half on an 11-2 run capped by a Parakhouski two-handed jam to make it 51-28 at the 15:15 mark. After Radford extended its lead to 23 on two separate occasions, the Blue Hose answered with a 14-1 flurry to cut the deficit to 54-44, but that's as close as they would get.
Following a 30-second timeout, the Highlanders scored seven unanswered to push the margin back to 17 (69-52) and put the game out of reach.
“There was one stretch midway through the second half where we let up defensively, but we responded after a timeout to open up the lead.”
Radford, which drilled 51.7 percent (15-29) of its attempts in the opening 20 minutes of action, jumped out to a 13-3 advantage before stretching it to 14 points at the half, 40-26.
Martin, who entered the contest averaging just over three points per outing, led all players at the break with nine, including the first five of the game for the Highlanders.
To go along with holding Presbyterian (10-13, 7-5 Big South) to just 9-of-23 in the period, Radford forced nine turnovers, which led to 11 points at the other end.
Bryan Bostic paced the Blue Hose with 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting, while Al'Lonzo Coleman finished with a double-double scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 boards.
On the defensive end of the floor, Radford compiled 13 steals, five blocks and forced 21 miscues.
“We wanted to win the hustle game (offensive rebounding, steals and blocks), and we did, we were plus 10.”
Another bright spot for the Highlanders was their 24-for-27 (88.9 percent) showing from the charity stripe.
“It was great to see us once again shoot well from the free throw line.”
The Highlanders will conclude their brief homestand with a 7 p.m. tip against Coastal Carolina Monday evening at the Dedmon Center.
