ORLANDO, Fla. – No. 47 Radford ran its doubles streak to eight straight and won four of the six singles tilts, including three in straight sets to conclude its trip to the “Sunshine State” with a 5-2 win over UCF in men's tennis action Friday.
The victory was the second straight for the Highlanders as they improve to 9-2 overall. No. 68 UCF falls to 7-6 on the season.
Along with it being Radford's seventh win in its last eight matches, it was the Highlanders' second win over a ranked opponent this year.
Highlighting the doubles play for Radford was the top duo of
Martin Sayer (Hong Kong/Sagemont Virtual) and
Zack Watson (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite), who won their eighth straight with an 8-2 win on the first court.
Radford swept the doubles play for the sixth time in 2009 with an 8-6 triumph at the second spot from
Ivan Salec (Oroslavje, Croatia/Oroslavje Secondary) and
Mehdi Benhammou (Rabat, Morocco/Descartes) and an 8-5 decision by the freshman tandem of
Stefan Bojic (Novi Sad, Serbia) and
Igor Ogrizek (Daruvar, Croatia/Birotechnika Grammar).
In singles play, the Highlanders got straight-set victories from Sayer, Benhammou and Watson, while Salec held off Marc Rocafort, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at the second spot.
Sayer, who recently competed on Hong Kong's Davis Cup team, wasted little time in the first singles match defeating Tarek Ben Soltane, 6-0, 6-0.
After playing its first 11 matches away from home, Radford will entertain Lees-McRae Sunday in a 1 p.m. dual at the Radford University Tennis Courts.
