ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Along with running its doubles streak to 10 straight, No. 47 Radford extended its winning streak to four consecutive with a 6-1 victory over UNC Asheville in Big South men's tennis action Sunday afternoon.
"It was a good win when you take into consideration the three hour drive, and playing on peculiar courts at a private school,” commented Radford head coach
Mike Anderson.
The triumph was also the Highlanders' 21 in their last 22 league matches as they improve to 11-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
Radford has won the doubles point in 12 of its 13 tilts, while recording an impressive 32-7 (.820) mark in doubles play.
Along with the team running their doubles streak to 10, Radford's top duo of
Martin Sayer (Hong Kong/Sagemont Virtual) and
Zack Watson (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite), who entered ranked 50th nationally, won their 10th straight contest with an 8-1 decision at the top spot.
Ivan Salec (Oroslavje, Croatia/Oroslavje Secondary) and
Mehdi Benhammou (Rabat, Morocco/Descartes) also cruised to an 8-1 win in their match to improve to 9-3 as a duo, while
Igor Ogrizek (Daruvar, Croatia/Birotechnika Grammar) and
Stefan Bojic (Novi Sad, Serbia) ran their streak to six straight by winning 8-6 on court three.
"Overall, it was a good effort as we continue to play strong doubles and continue to improve in doubles. Asheville is a developing program and we were glad to get away with a victory."
Radford carried its strong play into singles action by claiming five of the six matches. Each of the Highlanders' wins came in straight sets, including a 6-4, 6-2 victory by
Paul Boslet (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) at No. 6 in his spring debut.
The Highlanders will play their third match in as many days with a 1 p.m. contest at Coastal Carolina Monday afternoon.
