No. 47 Radford Extends Conference Streak to 14 with 5-2 Win at Coastal

RESULTS

CONWAY, S.C. –
Playing its third match in as many days, No. 47 Radford won its fifth straight dual with a 5-2 victory over Coastal Carolina in Big South men's tennis action Monday afternoon at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.

"The team was a little off today, probably because they are a little tired from three days of matches and travelling," said Radford head coach Mike Anderson. "But we were still able to pull out a win against a good Coastal Carolina team.”

Winners of 22 of their last 23 conference matches, the Highlanders improve to 12-2 overall and 4-0 in the league, while Coastal Carolina drops to 11-4 and 1-1.

For the 11th consecutive outing and 13th time in 14 contests, Radford grabbed an early 1-0 advantage by winning the doubles point. Its also the ninth time this spring the Highlanders have won all three doubles matches, while recording an impressive 35-7 (.833) record.

Ranked 50th nationally, Radford's Martin Sayer (Hong Kong/Sagemont Virtual) and Zack Watson (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) ran their winning streak to 11 with an 8-5 win over German Perez and Ernesto Ramos on court one.

"I was particularly pleased with our No.1 doubles team pulling off a win against a dangerous CCU team."

Igor Ogrizek (Daruvar, Croatia/Birotechnika Grammar) and Stefan Bojic (Novi Sad, Serbia) also recorded an 8-5 decision in their match, while Ivan Salec (Oroslavje, Croatia/Oroslavje Secondary) and Mehdi Benhammou (Rabat, Morocco/Descartes) clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win at the second spot.

After both Sayer and Salec recorded straight-set wins at the top to extend the Highlanders' lead to 3-0, Coastal Carolina cut the deficit to 3-2 with triumphs from Dmitry Vlaskin and Plamen Tzvetkov at positions four and three, respectively.

Down a set in the final match, Watson rallied with 6-3 wins in the second and third sets to clinch the match and extend Radford's conference winning streak to 14 straight.

With the contest already in hand, Ogrizek (10-3) joined Sayer (12-2), Watson (11-3) and Salec (10-3) in the double-digit wins category with a three-set decision over the Chanticleers' Dorian Sovic.

The Highlanders will return to action Saturday afternoon when they host George Washington in a 2 p.m. match at the Radford University Tennis Courts.
