No. 56 Men’s Tennis Runs Home Streak to 29 with 5-2 Win Over Appalachian State

RADFORD, Va. – No. 56 Radford extended its home winning streak to 29 with a 5-2 victory over Appalachian State in men's tennis action Monday afternoon at the RU Tennis Courts.

The win was the seventh in the last eight matches for the Highlanders as they improve to 14-3, while ASU falls to 11-8.

After having its 12-match doubles streak snapped yesterday at Elon, Radford took two of the three contests to grab an early 1-0 lead. Through 17 matches this spring, the Highlanders have won the doubles point 15 times, while going 41-10 in doubles play.

The Mountaineers opened the competition with an 8-1 margin on court three, but Radford responded with 8-5 and 8-4 decisions at the top two spots to secure the point.

The Highlanders' tandem of Ivan Salec (Oroslavje, Croatia/Oroslavje Secondary) and Mehdi Benhammou (Rabat, Morocco/Descartes) extended their winning streak to eight straight, while Martin Sayer (Hong Kong/Sagemont Virtual) and Zack Watson (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite), who entered ranked 50th in the nation, improved to a team-best 15-2.

Benhammou gave the Highlanders a 2-0 lead with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win over Lee Floyd at No. 4. Sayer (6-2. 6-1) and Salec (6-0, 6-4) followed with impressive straight-set victories of their own to clinch the victory for Radford.

Sayer, who entered as the 120th singles player in the nation, moved to 15-2 with his eighth consecutive triumph.

On court six, Watson won his 14th match of the year and fourth straight with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the Mountaineers' Alain Humblet.

Appalachian State's only wins came at positions three and five, where Peter Jacobs and Phillip Kloc recorded victories via third-set tiebreakers.

Radford will continue its six-match homestand to conclude the regular season with a 2 p.m. contest against Charlotte Thursday.
