No. 57 Radford Concludes Big South Slate in Perfect Fashion

RADFORD, Va. – Nationally-ranked Radford put the finishing touches on another undefeated Big South season with a 7-0 blanking of Gardner-Webb in men's tennis action Sunday afternoon at the RU Tennis Courts.

Along with winning 24 of their last 25 conference matches, the Highlanders capped off their third perfect league slate in the last four years to improve to 16-3 overall and 6-0 in the Big South. The Runnin' Bulldogs fall to 9-15 and 3-3.

Igor Ogrizek (Daruvar, Croatia/Birotechnika Grammar) and Stefan Bojic (Novi Sad, Serbia) put Radford one win away from its 17th doubles point in 19 matches with a convincing 8-2 victory on court three.

Watson and Ogrizek Birthday
Trailing 6-3 in the second match, Ivan Salec (Oroslavje, Croatia/Oroslavje Secondary) and Mehdi Benhammou (Rabat, Morocco/Descartes) came from behind to win their 10 straight and give the Highlanders an early 1-0 advantage with a 9-7 decision. With the triumph, Salec and Benhammou improved to 16-3 overall and 5-1 in league doubles.

With the top doubles match tied 7-7, Radford's duo of Martin Sayer (Hong Kong/Sagemont Virtual) and Zack Watson (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite), who entered ranked 48th nationally, fought back from a 5-2 tiebreak deficit to defeat Evgeny Slesarev and Rafael Altmayer, 8-7. Like Radford's No. 2 tandem, it was Sayer and Watson's 16th win of the spring and gave the Highlanders their 11th doubles sweep of the season.

Salec (6-0, 6-0), Watson (6-0, 6-1) and Sayer (6-0, 6-2) clinched the match for the Highlanders with impressive straight-set wins.

The victory for the nationally-ranked Sayer (90th) was his 24th in 25 career Big South singles matches, while Salec, the 2008 Freshman of the Year, stayed perfect in league play with another undefeated slate.

Like Salec a year ago, Ogrizek capped his first season in a Highlander uniform with an unblemished conference record thanks to a 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Jamie Lawlor on court four.

Bojic secured Radford's second shutout in as many days and sixth of the year with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 win over Rafael Altmayer.

Radford will continue its five-match homestand to conclude the regular season with a 1 p.m. contest against Binghamton Monday afternoon at the RU Tennis Courts.
