PITTSBURGH, Pa. – After dropping its season opener earlier in the day, Radford got contributions from a number of individuals to defeat Howard 3-1 (25-13, 25-14, 20-25, 25-16) and split day one of the 2009 Duquesne / Robert Morris Volleyball Tournament Friday at the Palumbo Center.
The victory lifts the Highlanders to 1-1 on the young campaign, while Howard falls to 0-1.
Lauren Clary (Roanoke, Va. / Cave Spring) and
Emily Hayes (Bartlett, Ill. / Bartlett) led Radford with 12 kills each, while junior
Laura Waddell (Lynchburg, Va. / E.C. Glass) chipped in 10.
Clary, fresh off her nine kill, five dig performance in the morning against Duquesne, added a match-high 21 digs to record one of two double-doubles for the Highlanders. Junior
Kiley Kent (Indianapolis, Ind. / Warren Central) tallied the other with 43 assists and 11 digs.
Sophomore
Katelyn Meeks (Richmond, Va. / Mills Godwin) was also impressive defensively picking up 19 digs for the red and white. To go along with her 12th career double-digit performance, Meeks had three of Radford's six service aces.
The Highlanders also got six kills on just 12 attempts (.500) from junior
Caroline Ratterree (Falcon, Colo. / Northeastern Junior College).
As a team, Radford found the floor with .192 of its attacks, while holding the Bison to a -.007 clip.
Radford will conclude its appearance in the 2009 Duquesne / Robert Morris Tournament with a pair of matches Saturday beginning with an 11 a.m. contest against Robert Morris followed by an afternoon tilt with Loyola (3 p.m.).
