PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Duquesne connected on .346 of its attempts to defeat Radford 3-0 (11-25, 23-25, 12-25) in the opening match of the 2009 Duquesne / Robert Morris Volleyball Tournament Friday at the Palumbo Center.
Senior
Lauren Clary (Roanoke, Va. / Cave Spring) led the Highlanders with 9 kills (.412) and eight digs, while freshman
Desiree Aramburu (Chicago, Ill. / Mother McAuley) contributed 18 assists and a team-high nine digs. Sophomore
Katelyn Meeks (Richmond, Va. / Mills Godwin) also added nine digs for Radford.
Nicole Wright paced the tournament host Dukes with a match-high 15 kills (.444) and eight digs. Duquesne's Sarah Svorinic led both setters with 27 assists.
As a team, the Highlanders finished with a disappointing .000 attack percentage, while the Dukes recorded a pair of block solos and 11 block assists.
Despite Duquesne winning the opening and third game in convincing fashion, Radford raced out to an early advantage in the second frame before the Dukes evened the score, 10-10. After the two clubs traded points to find themselves deadlocked again, 19-19, Duquesne collected six of the next 10 points to grab a 2-0 lead at the break.
Radford returns to the court Friday afternoon against Howard at 3 p.m., before concluding the season-opening event with contests against Robert Morris (11 a.m.) and Loyola (3 p.m.) Saturday.
