Clary and Highlanders Edge Canisius on Day One of Davidson Wildcat Classic, 3-2

(Roanoke, Va. / Cave Spring) recorded her second double-double (16 kills, 23 digs) of the season to lead Radford to a 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-3) victory over Canisius on day one of the Davidson Wildcat Classic Friday evening at Belk Arena.

The win was the fifth in the last six matches for the Highlanders as they improve to 6-3 overall, while Canisius falls to 2-6 on the young season.

The freshman duo of Emily Hayes (Bartlett, Ill. / Bartlett) and Mariah Nussbaum (Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade Julienne) also added double-digit kills for the Highlanders with 11 (.273) and 10 (.600), respectively.

Highlighted by nine kills (.500) and seven digs from Clary, Radford took the opening game, 25-21. As a team, the Highlanders finished game one with 16 kills and a .326 attack percentage.

Trailing 21-15 in game two, Radford reeled off six unanswered capped off by a Kiley Kent (Indianapolis, Ind. / Warren Central) service ace and kill to tie the score, 21-21. Canisius responded with two straight points and four of the next six to take the frame (25-23) and even the match.

Along with finding the floor with 18 of its attempts, Radford held the Griffs to just .065 in the third to grab a two games to one lead. After being held without a kill in the second, Clary teamed with Hayes to lead the Highlanders and all players with five kills each.

Game four featured nine ties and four lead changes before Canisius tied the contest and forced a fifth and decisive stanza with a 25-22 victory.

Sparked by back-to-back kills from sophomore Carly Fleming (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park), Radford cruised in the deciding game to claim its second five-game match this season.

Sophomore Katelyn Meeks (Richmond, Va. / Mills Godwin) and Kent were also impressive for the Highlanders defensively with 19 and 13 digs, respectively, while Desiree Aramburu (Chicago, Ill. / Mother McAuley) led both setters with 54 assists.

Radford, which entered the match averaging 7.75 service aces per contest, finished with a season-high 14, including five each from Meeks and Kent.

Michelle Godfrey led three Canisius players in double figures with 19 kills.

The Highlanders finished with a .227 hitting percentage to Canisius' .191 clip.

The Griffs held a 12-8 edge in blocks.

Radford will conclude its appearance in the 2009 Davidson Wildcat Classic with a pair of matches Saturday beginning with a 10 a.m. contest against Davidson followed by an afternoon tilt with UNC Wilmington at 4:30 p.m.
