LEWISBURG, Pa. – Despite five kills (.308), 18 assists and eight digs from junior
Kiley Kent (Indianapolis, Ind. / Warren Central), Radford fell to Rutgers 3-0 (18-25, 22-25, 23-25) on day one of the Bucknell Invitational Friday at Davis Gym.
The Highlanders drop their third straight falling to 7-6 overall, while Rutgers improves to 4-7 on the 2009 season.
Carly Fleming (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) led the Highlanders with eight kills, while fellow sophomore
Megan McWhorter (Newport News, Va. / Peninsula Catholic) found the floor with six of her 14 attempts (.357) and added five digs.
Radford's
Lauren Clary (Roanoke, Va. / Cave Spring) and
Katelyn Meeks (Richmond, Va. / Mills Godwin) paced both clubs defensively with 19 and 14 digs, respectively.
In game one, Rutgers jumped out to an early 12-6 advantage and never relinquished the lead taking the opener by a 25-18 margin.
Trailing 22-16 in the second, Radford cut the deficit to 24-22 with a 6-2 run capped off by three straight points, but Caitlyn Saxton gave Rutgers a 2-0 lead at the break with one of her match-high 15 kills.
Despite both clubs connecting on less than .100 of their attempts in game three, it featured 12 ties and six lead changes before the Scarlet Knights secured the match with a 25-23 win.
Rutgers outhit the Highlanders .152 to .114 and finished with a 6-4 edge in blocks.
Radford will conclude its appearance in the 2009 Bucknell Invitational with a pair of matches Saturday beginning with a 12 p.m. contest against Bucknell followed by a 3 p.m. tilt with Delaware State.
