Highlanders Fly By Eagles on Day One of Radford University Tournament, 3-0

RADFORD, Va. –
Radford connected on .394 of its attempts and recorded a season-high 13 service aces to cruise by Coppin State 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-11) on day one of the 2009 Radford University Volleyball Tournament Friday evening at the Dedmon Center.

The victory lifts the Highlanders to 3-2 on the young campaign, while the Eagles remain winless falling to 0-5. 

Sophomore Carly Fleming (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn Park) paced Radford with a career-high eight kills on 12 attempts for a .583 hitting percentage. Laura Waddell (Lynchburg, Va. / E.C. Glass) and Emily Hayes (Bartlett, Ill. / Bartlett) added six kills each for the Highlanders, while Katelyn Meeks (Richmond, Va. / Mills Godwin) picked up 12 digs and Desiree Aramburu (Chicago, Ill.) led both setters with 26 assists.

Thanks to 13 kills and a .629 attack percentage Radford cruised to a 25-9 victory in the opening game to grab an early 1-0 advantage.

To go along with finding the floor 13 more times, the Highlanders added eight service aces in the second frame, including four from Caroline Ratterree (Falcon, Colo. / Northeastern Junior College) to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

The Highlanders continued their impressive play in the third as they closed the game and the match on a 12-4 streak to win their 600th match in school history.

Senior Lauren Clary (Roanoke, Va. / Cave Spring) also finished with four service aces for the Highlanders, who are averaging 8.4 aces per match in 2009.

Radford held the Eagles to a -.030 clip, while holding a slim 5-4 edge in total blocks.

Brown led the way for Coppin State with a match-high 15 digs.

The inaugural Radford University Volleyball Tournament will conclude with five games on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. The Highlanders will battle South Carolina State at 2:30 p.m. and close the event with a 6:30 p.m. tilt with Bradley.
