James Madison Holds Off Volleyball, 3-2

BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va. –
James Madison used a .444 attack percentage and 11 kills in the final game to hold off Radford 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 23-25, 25-20, 8-15) in non-conference volleyball action Tuesday evening in front of 723 fans at the Dedmon Center.

The loss ends the Highlanders' longest winning streak since 2001 dropping them to 5-3 on the young season, while James Madison improves to 4-3.

Along with 14 kills (.250) in the opening game, the Highlanders used a 13-4 streak capped off by five straight points to erase a 7-3 deficit and grab the lead for good.

In game two, James Madison jumped out to a 16-8 advantage and held off a late Radford charge to even the match at the break, 1-1. The Highlanders used a 12-6 flurry to close to within one, 22-21, but the Dukes closed with three unanswered.

Game three, which was the most competitive of the contest, featured nine ties and four lead changes before JMU closed with a small spurt to grab its first lead of the match.

Trailing two games to one, Radford scored the first 10 points of the fourth and never looked back forcing a fifth and decisive frame with a 25-20 triumph.

Laura Waddell (Lynchburg, Va. / E.C. Glass) and Carly Fleming (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) led the Highlanders with 11 kills each, while Lauren Clary (Roanoke, Va. / Cave Spring) added 10.

Desiree Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley), who was tabbed the Big South Freshman of the Week earlier in the day, recorded her third double-double of the season with 42 assists and 14 digs.

Sophomore Katelyn Meeks (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) and junior Kiley Kent (Indianapolis, Ind. / Warren Central) also hit the 10-dig plateau with 15 and 14, respectively.

A trio of Dukes finished the evening with double-digit kills including Danielle Erb (17), who also led the way with a match-high 17 digs.

Despite the setback, the Highlanders served up seven more aces tonight, four of which came from sophomore Leigh Myers (Baton Rouge, La. / The Dunham School).

Both clubs finished with six blocks.

Radford returns to action this weekend at the Davidson Wildcat Classic beginning with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Canisius Friday in Davidson, N.C.
