RADFORD, Va. -- Radford opens up a Big South men's basketball road trip through South Carolina against first-place Coastal Carolina, winners of 12 straight, on Thursday evening with a 7 p.m. tip at Kimbel Arena.
The Highlanders (8-6, 4-1 Big South) play their second of three consecutive games away from home and will try to rebound from their first Big South regular season loss of the season, an 83-77 setback at High Point last Saturday night (Jan. 9).
Through Wednesday's games, Coastal Carolina (16-2, 6-0) is second in the nation behind Kentucky for the most wins in Division I this season. The Chanticleers are the only unbeaten team remaining in Big South play and are off to their best league start since the 1990-91 campaign.
Radford is also trying to improve on its 34-15 (.693) record in the series against Coastal Carolina, seeking a third straight win over the Chanticleers.
Thursday's matchup features a meeting of premier frontcourt performers - Radford's
Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) and Coastal Carolina's Joseph Harris.
A year ago, Parakhouski and Harris were named First Team All-Big South performers, and the two were named preseason all-conference picks by the league media and national publications entering 2009-10. This season, Parakhouski and Harris are two of the top producing frontcourt players in the country and have combined to claim Big South player of the week honors in five of the season's weeks.
The 6-foot-11 Parakhouski, tied for second in the country in double-doubles (11), is in the top three nationally in scoring average (third - 24.1), rebounding average (first – 12.9) and field goal percentage (second – 63.2).
Harris, a 6-foot-5 redshirt senior, is fourth in double-doubles (10) and 28th nationally in rebounding (9.8). This season, Harris became Coastal Carolina's all-time leader in blocked shots and rebounding.
In Radford's loss at High Point on Saturday, Parakhouski hit the 20-point mark for the 12th time this season and 19th time in his career, scoring 29 on 12 of 22 shooting. The senior center added a game-high 14 rebounds, combining with frontcourt teammate
Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) (19 points) for 48 of Radford's 77 points.
Harris was one of four Chanticleers to score in double figures in an 80-64 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday night, posting his 40th career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
