BOX SCORE
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Jamarco Warren scored 18 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to lead Charleston Southern to a 70-55 victory over Radford in Big South men's basketball action on Saturday evening at CSU Field House.
Following a back and forth start to the second half, the Buccaneers, who improved to 8-0 at home, grabbed control of the contest with a 21-7 run to push their lead to double figures, where it would stay the rest of the way.
Charleston Southern (10-8, 5-3 Big South), which shot 53.3 percent (8-15) from three-point range and missed just one of its 17 tries from the charity stripe, held the Highlanders (9-7, 5-2) to 32.8 percent (21-64) from the floor and 5-of-24 from deep.
“Charleston Southern shot the ball great from behind the arc as well as free throw line and earned a well-deserved victory,” said Radford head coach Brad Greenberg. “We played a poor game and had difficulty getting good shots against their zone.”
Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) paced the Highlanders with 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while
Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) recorded his 13th double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds (eight offensive).
Warren, who played just nine minutes in the first half, made 6-of-10 from the floor and knocked down all six of his free throws. Jeremy Sexton also finished in double figures for the Buccaneers with 18 points, including three buckets of his own from long range.
After Sexton's trey with five seconds left in the first half put Charleston Southern up, 27-25,
Blake Smith (Charlotte, N.C./United Faith Christian) drilled his second half court shot at the buzzer this season to give the Highlanders a 28-27 lead at the break.
Despite hitting just three of their first 29 shots, the two clubs closed the opening half a combined 20-for-35 (57.1 percent), including eight three-pointers. Both Radford (12-33) and the Buccaneers (11-31) shot just over 35 percent in the first 20 minutes.
“We defended well early in the first half, but didn't take advantage of that with our inability to score," Greenberg said. "We have to become more efficient attacking a zone that clogs the paint. And have to be able to knock down some perimeter shots against teams that dare us to shoot from the outside.”
Both clubs finished with 39 rebounds in a game that featured four ties and 13 lead changes.
Radford will begin a stretch of five games in 10 days when it hosts VMI in a 7 p.m. contest at the Dedmon Center Thursday evening.
