Second Half Surge Lifts Highlanders Over Bulldogs


RADFORD, Va. – Radford shot 48 percent in the second half and held UNC Asheville to just 23 percent, keying the Highlanders' 61-50 Big South victory, Saturday afternoon at the Dedmon Center.

Denay Wood (Bailey's Crossroads, Va./Annandale) and freshman Da'Naria Erwin Spencer (Charlotte, N.C./East Mecklenburg) each posted a double-double for the Highlanders (4-11, 3-1 Big South), who won their first back-to-back games this season.

Wood dropped in a career and game-high 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Posting her second straight career-high, the junior was 6-for-10 from the field, including a career-high 4-of-6 on 3-pointers.

Erwin Spencer dished out a career-best 10 assists, which surpassed her previous best of eight, from in the previous game against Winthrop. She also scored 11 points and pulled down six rebounds.

Lindsey Montgomery recorded a double-double for the Bulldogs (5-12, 1-4 Big South) with 17 points and a game-high 13 caroms.

After the game's fifth and final tie (39-39) at the 12:59 mark of the second half, Radford broke the contest wide open with an 11-1 run over the next 4:42 to take a commanding 50-40 lead.

Following redshirt senior Kymesha Alston's (Hampton, Va./Manhattan) old-fashioned three-point play broke the tie, UNC Asheville missed a layup two possessions later that would have cut the lead to one.

On the ensuing Highlander possession, Wood drained her fourth triple of the contest to make it 45-39.

That would be the turning point of the game. After UNCA made one-of-two free throws, Radford scored the next five points to make it 50-40 with 8:01 left and led by eight-or-more points the rest of the game.

Alston finished with 12 points, all coming in the second half due to two fouls in the first 2:39 of the game.

In an evenly played first half which saw no more than a five-point lead, Radford took a slim 30-29 advantage into halftime.

The Highlanders shot 42 percent and were paced by Wood and Erwin Spencer with 10 and nine points, respectively. Montgomery matched Wood with a half-high 10 points for the Bulldogs.

Radford took its largest lead (11-7) at 15:34 after Wood drained back-to-back triples during a 6-2 spurt.

Sparked by consecutive trifectas by Kendall Shepard, UNCA used a 10-1 run to stake itself to a 17-12 advantage with 10:08 on the clock.

After Radford regained the lead (20-19) on fast break jumper by Erwin Spencer at 6:15, there were six more lead changes and two ties in the final six minutes of the half.

Radford finished shooting 44.2 percent (23-52) from the floor and 55.6 percent (5-9) from downtown. UNCA shot 30 percent (18-60) from the floor and 83.3 percent (10-12) from the charity stripe.

Shepard, Lindsey Thompson and Breaira Barksdale each chipped in eight points for UNCA. Junior Jewell Kinlaw (Madison, Ala./Northwest Shoals CC) added eight points and seven rebounds for Radford.

The Bulldogs controlled the glass, 41-35, which included 16 offensive rebounds, but only scored nine second chance points.

Radford concludes its four-game home stand on Monday, Jan. 18 against Presbyterian. The Bulldogs head to Lynchburg, Va. to face Liberty on Monday. Both game are set to tip at 7 p.m.
