Record Defensive First Half Highlights Highlanders' Victory Over Presbyterian

RADFORD, Va. – Along with holding Presbyterian to just one first-half field goal, Radford shot a season-high 50 percent and cruised to its third straight win with a 59-34 victory in Big South women's basketball Monday evening at the Dedmon Center.

Box Score

Radford (5-11, 4-1), which held the Blue Hose to a school-record for lowest points total in a half (5), scored the first 13 points of the contest and stretched its lead to as many as 26 (31-5) on a Da'Naria Erwin Spencer (Charlotte, N.C. / East Mecklenburg) jumper with 12 seconds remaining in the half.

It was the fewest points allowed in the first half since holding Liberty to eight on Jan. 21, 2001 and in a game since Jan. 3, 2008 against USC Upstate (34).

Presbyterian's (2-14, 1-3) only field goal in the first half came at the 4:43 mark.

After being held to just five percent shooting (1-20) in the first 20 minutes of action, Presbyterian connected on 41.7 percent (10-24) of its attempts in the second half to finish with a 25 percent (11-44) clip.

Erwin Spencer and Jewell Kinlaw (Madison, Ala. / Bob Jones) paced the Highlanders with 13 points each.

Katherine Brockett's (Geelong, Australia / Kardinia International College) second trey of the contest gave the Highlanders a 39-point advantage, 53-14, their largest lead of the evening.

Following that bucket, the Blue Hose outscored the Highlanders 21-6 over the final 8:09 of the contest, which included holding Radford scoreless for the first 4:12 of the run.

In addition to 17 steals, Radford forced 26 miscues turning them into 21 points.

Despite the loss, Presbyterian held a slim 34-32 margin on the glass led by Shonda Burnside's game-high eight caroms.

Freshman Sarah Tabb (Chesapeake, Va./Stone Bridge School) corralled a team and career-best six boards for the Highlanders.

Burnside was the lone Blue Hose in double figures with 12 points, including a perfect 8-for-8 effort at the charity stripe.

The lone downside for the Highlanders was their 11-for-25 (44 percent) showing at the line.

The Highlanders return to court Saturday afternoon when they travel to Coastal Carolina for a 2 p.m. contest.
