RADFORD, Va. – Radford continues home men's basketball action against in-state Big South conference rivals when the Highlanders host Liberty on Saturday in a game televised by Mid-Atlantic Sports Network at 6 p.m.
Saturday's game closes the first round of Big South play for Radford (10-7, 6-2 Big South), which has the same conference record as last season's regular season championship campaign entering the Liberty (9-11, 4-4) matchup. The Highlanders, following Monday's non-conference contest at James Madison, begin the second go-through with three conference games on the road in a row.
Radford continues its longest-running series with a current Division I foe on Saturday – the Highlanders and Flames first met in Radford's first varsity season of 1974-75. Radford owns a 32-22 advantage over Liberty in the all-time series, and have a 14-7 record against their in-state conference rival since 2000.
History didn't repeat itself for Radford on Thursday. VMI, which played spoiler in the Highlanders' return to the newly-renovated Dedmon Center a year ago, didn't do the same in the one-year anniversary of the building's re-opening as Radford out-ran the Keydets for a 109-91 win.
Highlighting the night were the double-double performances of
Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus),
Laz Trifunovic (Belgrade, Serbia)
and
Joey Lynch-Flohr (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax). Thursday was the first time three Radford players hit double-doubles in the same game since the last meeting with VMI – March 7, 2009 in the Big South tournament championship.
In games this season where the Highlanders have two or more players post double-doubles, Radford is 5-0 with an average margin of victory of 22.4 points per game.
Against the nation's highest scoring team, the Highlanders had their largest scoring output since 114 against the Keydets on Feb. 14, 2006. Radford got to triple digits by shooting 58 percent from the field for the game (45 of 78), including 61 percent in the second half. Radford also scored 52 first half points, a season-high, after averaging 27 in the previous two games.
Liberty, which finished in third place in last year's Big South regular season standings, is in a tie for fifth place entering the weekend. With a wrist injury to leading scorer Kyle Ohman, the Flames have just one player scoring in double figures on the active roster in freshman guard Evan Gordon (11.2).
Liberty features a young starting lineup that includes three freshmen (Gordon, Patrick Konan and Antwan Burrus) and a pair of sophomores (Jesse Sanders, Jeremy Anderson). On its active roster, the Flames have just one upperclassman in junior reserve guard James Spencer.
