ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Due to the snowstorm and hazardous travel conditions, the men's basketball contest between Radford and UNC Asheville has been moved to Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Highlanders (11-9, 7-3 Big South) got back in the win column with an 80-73 victory on Thursday night at Gardner-Webb to end a two-game slide and stay within two games of conference-leading Coastal Carolina (9-1).
UNC Asheville (9-12, 6-4) has been the Big South's hottest team of late, extending a six-game winning streak with an 83-69 home win over High Point on Thursday, the Bulldogs' fifth straight conference win. Asheville, which is tied for third place with two other teams, started the conference season 1-4 and tied for sixth place before the winning streak began Jan. 14 at VMI.
Radford, which extended its all-time series lead over Asheville to 30-26 with an 82-74 home win on Jan. 2, is trying to win its fifth game in a row against the Bulldogs. In the last meeting between the two teams,
Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) scored 31 points, including 16 of Radford's final 26 in leading the Highlanders.
With the game tied at 56-56 at the 6:52 mark in a back-and-forth second half, Parakhouski led the Highlanders to a comfortable advantage beginning with his three-point play to give Radford the lead back for good at 59-56. His 11 straight points from 3:48 to 2:10 pushed the lead back to double digits, 72-60.
Parakhouski connected on all eight of his field goal tries in a second half where the Highlanders shot 71 percent (17 of 24) from the field and posted his second straight 30-point effort by missing just one field goal (12 of 13) and hitting 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Parakhouski also added seven rebounds.
Entering Saturday's contest, Parakhouski is fifth nationally in scoring (22.6), second in rebounding (12.7), first in double-doubles (16) and third in made field goals (174).
His 16th double-double (15 points, 12 rebounds) came in Thursday's win, but the Highlanders were paced by freshman
Blake Smith's (Charlotte, N.C./United Faith Christian) career-high 23 points. Along with just missing Radford's single-game record for steals in a contest with seven, Smith finished with four rebounds, four assists and three blocks, while hitting four 3-pointers.
For UNCA on Thursday, J.P. Primm scored 16 points and had 12 assists to lead five Bulldogs in double figures. Asheville shot a season-high .633 from the field, was 5-for-10 from 3-point range and hit 16 of 20 free throws.
Primm, who had 11 points against Radford on Jan. 2, leads a quintet of Asheville players averaging in double figures on the season with his 11.6 points (13.0 in Big South games).
